Glowing mushroom farm and a merchant (for non-lesser healing potions) would probably be the biggest help right from the start, along with protracted spelunking trips to find heart crystals. Sooner you can take a hit, the better off you're going to be. Finding a decent ranged weapon (read: at least an enchanted boomerang) is also a pretty good idea, which ties further into the cave diving part. If you've got a boomerang or flail, you can probably manage to set up hornet farming stations in the jungle, once you find it, to get the makings for better (jungle-tier) weapons. Maybe even get a cobalt set, but the real goal would be a thorn chakram, which is strong enough and easy enough to use to make getting the rest of th'high end stuff a lot easier.

After that it's getting a nightmare pick (Eater summoning or dynamite) and enough obsidian for a skull, then hellstone mining for th'good stuff.

Speaking of hornet farming stations, what do you make em like? I just sort of kept killing the fuckers until I got what I wanted wherever I was.

With a 'rang, just two four-tile high walls on either side of my dude, with platforms between th'top two tiles, to keep black slimes out. Then I just fire th'rang upwards until the bugs stop moving.

For flails, what I showed here.

Then it's just a matter of turning autoclicker on and waiting.

Here's mine:

(Immediately after taking this, I went up to the entrance, opened the left door, and killed that man-eater with a combination of magic missiles and a Molten Fury with unholy arrows.)

I had to clear out a bunch of land and make sure there are open routes to it so the hornets don't spawn somewhere where they can get stuck, and I also have to periodically check for and kill man-eaters, but other than that, the hornets just fly into the lava and kill themselves, and I collect the loot from underneath, in safety. Man-eaters don't ever spawn close enough to be able to bite you, as far as I can tell (though if you go offscreen and come back, they can spawn where you were).

I'm basically just waiting for a cobalt breastplate to drop.

You can't do that in singleplayer. You have to be hosting a multiplayer game, as far as I know.

Well, this is certainly fun.

Unfortunately, Dwarf Fortress spoiled instilled great survival tactics into me. I start a new world, and the first thing I want to do is burrow into the side of the mountain and get some stone between me and the cursed sky. And digging is slow going.

This is, of course, absolutely disastrous for actually building a house. I don't want to dig away all that comforting natural wall, much less replace it with trees (though, I do enjoy cutting them down). I could use stone, but there's--tragically--not exactly enough of the stuff near the surface.

I tried a compromise, building the first room half above ground, and covering it with dirt, but that makes me feel like a hobbit instead of accomplishing anything, and I haven't figured out how to get the NPCs to move down to the newer rooms (though I have seen one hop up to a second level).

No, not a coward. What's a word that means the same as coward but more offensive?  :P No, I joke. Your no coward for having things to do above ground.

Play in a server so you can skip the day and kill all the zombies/eyes. You'll have 50 silver in no time.
