Yes, but as spotty as the fall-damage hit detection is anywhere (landing on 1-tile steps seems to fool it pretty easily), it's even more so on platforms.  I've got a platform at the bottom of a cliff I've accidentally fell to multiple times - sometimes it's deadly, sometimes nothing.

Aside from drowning in a huge pool that's next to my spawn, lately I've got:

My anvil made.
Iron weapons.
Found gold and got a golden broadsword.
And found a shadoworb which I couldn't get to.

 The way I'm skipping huge parts is rather lulzy.

Well, I missed out all of the silver stuff, I go in the corruption zone without any armour or anything, I still haven't got a merchant and occasionally I take trips to the mushroom fields underground.

So I was digging a tunnel down to hell, and it turns out part of the dungeon intersects with my tunneling plans. I haven't beaten skeletron and don't really want to fight him right now, so my question is; Will I still get insta-killed if I'm pretty darn far away from the actual dungeon entrance?

So my brother made this underground house out of obsidian and drowned like a hundred times farming for the stuff.

The building has no functionality, but it has some nice golden chandeliers.

You can also hold the jump button to swim straight up until you reach the surface.
