All you really need is a grappling hook, unless you're actually free swimming in a very large body of water.  If you're just mining through a water-heavy cavern, simply dig a hole in the ceiling above the water level and grapple to it.

Maybe some sort of competive PvE? Two or more teams with the same inventory, whoever gets to summon and kill a certain boss first wins.

Found a solution to my problem finally, at the cost of convenience.

At least a lack of my original equipment is the only real problem. YAY! it works.

EDIT:
If I'm up for it, I'll setup a Hamachi server, but if anything it would more be for me hanging out with my brothers online.

Welp, looks like I won't be able to get this until at least a week from now, barring an act of good samaritanism. 

I'll still be working on plans, though, which I'll share here as I finish them, to hopefully inspire those of you who actually can build megaprojects at the moment.

I found a floating island! Yay! Except... I did it by paving a glass ceiling right over it. I jumped down when I saw a tree, but it seems this island has a hole in the right side much like the one I found earlier in the thread (with its hole in the middle). I took 1484 fall damage.
