You know how I know nobody likes the EoW? It doesn't have a nickname like skeletor or Eyethulhu, it's just an acronym. If people loved it, they would give it a pet name.

Even if the game was made to be easy to mod I really don't think the goal of the game supports it.

The general idea of the game is to be able to quickly hop onto another world with your friend and help them out. Player 'skins' were not supported because the devs wanted equipment to be identifiable as they determine what you can do, so they have put thought into providing an easy seamless way of playing with your buddies. There is also a distinct progression of advancement in the materials and tiers that show the basic flow of the game. It could use some polish yes, but the design goals of the game seem to contradict modding. You would have to deal with mod versions interacting, downloading to eachother and working around "The whole world is made of diamonds and molten equipment" stuff that will happen.

The decision to not add modding support was deliberate for the kind of game they want to make, not for any dislike of the feature. The game they want to make does not have modding in it. And I'll be behind that 100%, much like how the Adams brothers have no interest in multiplayer in the game they want to make.

The only problem I have with that interpretation, and it is a good one, is that once you get over the mundane-to-Demonite hurdle (or such), the game is largely over except for finding all the rare stuff that can't be crafted.  As this thread's replete examples show, you can reach the top of the ladder fairly quickly, and then there's nothing else to do, not even start over since you can take everything with you.  Well, you can always build shit of course, but two dimensions doesn't give it as much extensibility as Minecraft for instance.

The other note, as Max heard it apparently, is that the game is not just not designed to be modable, but is built in such a way that even the developers are likely to have a hard time altering it.  The game's lifespan as a title will directly depend on their ability to provide new content, and it sounds like that could be a distinct problem.

There are a lot of problems they could have with their plan yeah, but I just sorta need to defend the idea that they have no intention of including modding and there is nothing wrong with that, even for a game so much like minecraft.

Well the ship can float as long as they do two critical things.
1. Bucket loads of content. As soon as an event is over, and you have the drops you want, there is little incentive to go back. We need lots of new content constantly.
2. Multiplayer content. They can only add so much stuff before it starts to feel like it is all the same thing with a palette swap. If they force us into multiplayer strategies, things become a lot more interesting. Right now this is very lacking. There is a ring that heals me for an amount, but why no ring that heals all allies around me? Why no support spells to raise an allies defence? Why no crowd control abilities that deal little to no damage, but put enemies in a position where they can be killed more easily? If they give it stronger multiplayer support, then there is a new dimension to spread there content over, so more to do before things feel bland.

Huh. If you trap enemies in a small enough space, they'll wallhack their way out.

How did you get all the seeds???

Seeds schmeeds. I built vertical mudwalls until the grass grew along them, then extended horizontal platforms...rinse, repeat, rinse, repeat. A few seeds helped the process along.

Whether or not modding was intended or will be possible

If it's one thing the Bay12 Forums have taught me about the indie game scene, is that you can't stop people from modding. They have too much free time, obsession, talent and drive. It's not a question of if modding can be possible, it's more a question of how much we'll have to mutilate the client to make it possible.

I think the client side texture decision was both what was mentioned, and the "Spore" effect, in that any free-from multiplayer modding tends to result in penis, at some point, and for what looks like a family friendly game, that's not good. I think that at least partially contributed to the decision.

I think in the end, Re-logic will given in to modding wishes at least to a limited degree. It's worth remembering, and has been since the game was announced, that it's moving through the stages of development, release and post-release at a dead run. Everything is a matter of backlog at this point....and we shouldn't fly off the handle with statements like "Dead by June" and such. It may take Terraria a year to really buckle down and flesh out content, and that includes mod support. In the meantime, hacks like the map viewer show a lot of promise for what can be done without Re-logic's support.

A map viewer, on a game like terraria, is some what easier then modding the game because your not haxing into the game, your just making a reader for the map files. Still, the talent is there, and eager to break into this game and eat the goo inside. New sprites packs should be first...

Yeah... only thing I have to throw in about th'whole 'soon to run out of steam' thing for Terraria is to kinda' point out that T's only been in development since January of this year. 4 1/2 months for ground, up. It's also been out for, what, four days now? And has already have a patch? I'd humbly suggest that bodes well insofar as content, etc, updates are concerned. Some of us are just getting burned out from playing too much :P

It's just entirely too early to speculate with any hopes of accuracy, but what I've been seeing seems to lend more to optimism than anything. These people have been on our radar for basically no time at all, insofar as gaming development goes, and Red's primary previous work is ruddy SMBX. Their team's also just made several hundred thousand dollars, which bodes bloody well for, yanno', hiring more people to get crackin' on code and content.

Let's save the negative outlook for a month from now, then we can quote ourselves on everything turning out like we expected.

In any case, th'game's not over until you've gold plated the jungle and replaced all the blocks in hell with pink dungeon brick. Then you can say you've beat the game :P

*fistbumps skeleton* Nice catch!

You let the skeleton live, right? If you can get yourself out of their reach for a bit, they'll turn around and go away.

About modding:
AFAIK its done with .net. And quick glance (using google) shows that it's not that hard to decompile .net (i think comparable to java in minecraft). Not sure about integrating something into the program. So yeah i'll try modding it when i get it...

I'm not sure what is kept when you compile into the intermediate language. Pretty sure you loose member names to say the least, as well as comments and indenting.

I don't have a hook yet, so... oh well.

That run through the caverns gave me a lot of ore, though. I now have 90 (!) copper bars, 36 iron, 33 silver and 22 gold. Hmmm... gold pick and hammer, silver broadsword and greaves, iron chainmail, copper watch, sell stuff for a mining helmet...

The irony is, that once you have the materials for better stuff, copper is basically useless and you'll still be up to your ass in it.  I obsessively mine every piece that I see of course, because I could always sell it.  Does raise the question of why I can't just mint my own coins with the stuff.  It's not like there's a treasury or anything.  Not to mention I built the fucking town, so these guys should take whatever I call money and like it.

Built it, defended it against Goblins, horrible eyes, demon worms, and can level it for the cost of about 10 gold. You're practically king. It does seem a little unfair.

There's a lot of lower level equipment I think needs to still be fleshed out. Trinkets, stuff like craftable boomerangs, other weapons, other furnishings that are functional like the bed....At the very least, Redigit has no excuses for not hiring another coder to help him produce content, if he's the kind that works well with others.
