Also, I'm slightly regretting making a meteor hamaxe before meteor greaves because I've got the breastplate, and it doesn't go too well with my current silver armour.

The problem with starfury is that it works only on the surface, and most of the tasty stuff is underground/in dungeons.

Plus, cobalt is much better.

It seems to me like you can basically dominate the game with Molten Pickaxe/Armor Set/Hamaxe/Flamarang + Grappling Hook, a full stack of dirt, some potions, and some accessories (cloud in a bottle, flippers, and health regen ring being the major ones)

No need for anything that uses mana or ammo.  With just the above, you can go anywhere and take on any situation.  I could fight in the underworld for hours and the only real threat was getting knocked into lava (and even then I have about 3 seconds to get out).  I fought Skeletor (with two friends in demon gear) and only used three potions.  I wasn't even making much effort to avoid taking damage, either.

Flamarang makes basically every other ranged weapon obsolete, IMO, and I even prefer it most of the time in melee range due to ridiculous attack speed and good knockback.  The only situation where I prefer the sword is against bosses (if they hover close to me for a bit) or large burrowing creatures, and even then you can simplify even more by just using the pickaxe.  Less damage but slightly better attack speed and less accidents/confusion when using a smaller equipment set.

Money:  The only use I have for it late game is crafting healing potions.

I don't know how it's possible for there to be a clear delineation of Newbs and Leets after the game has been (legally) available for about two and a half days.  And characters persist across servers, so the gulf will never disappear.

I'm right there with you, and I've probably played at least 8 or 9 hours by now.  Copper armor, Goggles, Silver broadsword, Gold bow.  My utility has increased dramatically since I made a Hookshot, but I still can't find or fight anything serious.  I finally just found my first lewt-chest the last time I played, and it had some nice (but mundane stuff) and my first artifact... Hermes Boots.  Yeah, I'm fuckin' pro now.

I had full silver and a gold sword and pick before I had the iron to make a helm even.

That and my first floating island was visible from the top of a very, very nearby hill.

Called in sick the last couple days... and not just to play Terraria.  Whole family has actually been sick.  Have had extra time for Terraria, though, between diarrhea and puke cleaning sessions.  Also made good progress on my 3d model of Atma Weapon from FF6.

I smashed a few corrupt orbs and killed the Eye of Cthulhu and Eater of Worlds a few times.  Had a nearly full set of demon gear and was like "Ok... now what?"  So I just dug straight down.  The underworld was the only challenge left to face, and those fire imps did kick my ass at first.  It was fun jumping straight out of bed down the pipe to hell and free falling for a couple solid minutes every time I died.

Got most of my stuff from multiplayer. Exceptions are the boomerang, which I found and the meteorite armour, which I mined and made myself.

I think this void exists because for the player that has no idea what they are doing, it takes a lot longer. Once you reach a certain point, the rate that you get new gear increases a lot. So when I hear that people are wandering around in silver armour after ten hours, I think 'Well in less then an hour if you do X Y and Z you could be in shadow! And then it is no time at all to necro."

Cobalt is the exception. Fuck that shit is hard to get.
