As far as beds are considered in single player... do you simply build one to redefine your spawn point? Or do you have to activate it in some way?

Right click it.

It will say "Spawn point set." If it doesn't, your bed probably isn't in a "real room".

So I have gold equipment... should I start looking around for meteorites and is the best way to find them just to travel a long ways along the surface?

If your in gold, you could kill a few bosses and very quickly get full shadow. It's good gear, better defence then meteor and a great set bonus.

You have to have destroyed a shadow orb beforehand. Unless it glitches out and announces a meteor has fallen as soon as you spawn.

 Stuff like that happens.

 And fuck shadow gear. Meteor is more practical.

What do you need all that mana for going from gold armour? Hell, for beating skeletor you want defence and a throwing weapon, so shadow it is. True, later game meteor becomes your best choice, but only because you need the mana.

hamachi ... i will have to look around the intertubes for tutorials and stuff , until then , what version of terraria is it running?

Getting shadow armour is a lot quicker and more reliable then then bars required for the flamerang. For some reason my map has stopped giving me meteors, so I can't upgrade all sorts of weapons... The bosses, however, you can't get rid of now. Also, it is possible to go a long time and not find blue mushrooms.

You have to remember that just because you had access to something, not everybody does. But with the way bosses show up uninvited, and the massive number of demon alters around corruption, access to bosses is the most certain thing in the game.
