Apparently things get rather hot down below. I'm past the little magma lakes and seems like the floor is a bit too hot for my feet in some areas. Do I need special gear to survive down there?

Need to make an obsidian skull, which is made with 10 obsidian, to not take damage from Hellstone or Meteorite.

I get constant little hiccups when I host, even when connecting to my local IP.

It's kind of horrible.

Not sure how to fix it.

by hiccups you mean lag? or disconnects?

Not really sure how, but a night is almost over and I've gotten no zombies trying to break in. The only ones I found were a long ways away from my base. And I can't find any Demon Eyes either. Zero. I need lenses, dammit!

You can usually find demon eyes near the corruption at night.
No i don't mean eater of souls.
And I don't mean inside the corruption, I usually find them near the edges.

EDIT: got to the corruption at night, still no monsters. Went into the corruption, got a Devourer. No eaters of souls. I encountered a single slime on the way there, but other than that, no monsters.

I've tried quitting the map and re-entering it. I've tried a new map. I've tried restarting the game. There are no enemies except for the occasional slime. Where was this while I was building? Why it is that now, when I actually need stuff from them, the monsters don't spawn?

Oh yea! Eye of Cthulhu out of nowhere summons itself, and I take it like a boss! Merchant standing in the way survives with 12hp. Saves me hunting eyes for lenses. Time for a lightsbane.

So twice within a period of two in-game days I've gotten a message something like "You feel an evil presence watching you" (forgot the exact wording, but something like that) The first time I was deep underground and was worried I might be missing out. I managed to get above ground for the second one- and guess what.

Just got owned by smashing a orb, getting THE EATER OF WORLDS as well as a blood moon. Too much...

EDIT: Ok that was cool. Back at home after dying, the music goes back to normal, and then in a second or two goes back to the boss theme. Nust be because of the blood moon I think. Then I see the last section of the worm fly in from the side of my screen, so I turn and 1 hit KO it. Awesome...
