It's great fun if you have friends to play it with, and even if you race through all the content in the least challenging fashion possible without any interest in fooling around with the sandboxy home-building and geosculpting aspects, it will still last you a few days.  Easily worth $4.

A rather incomplete guide to the end game follows. Spoilers!!!!!

Spoiler: The First Part (click to show/hide)

So you have gold, right? Then you go buy a bunch of shuriken from the merchant (if you don't have a merchant, get one) and then kill a bunch of demon eyes for their lens. Then when you have a grappling hook go to a corruption and descend one of the chasms. Down at the bottom in a horizontal chasm type thing, there will be a few demon altars. Stand next to one, and with 6 lens you will be able to craft a suspicious looking eye. Make one, and then return home. Prepare a flattened area to use the eye on and when night falls, use it. Defeat the resulting enemy and then you can use the ores he drops to make some sweet new weapons, but only a few. With the aforementioned sweet new weapons, go to the corruption again and go down again. At this point you should be getting a dryad, so you should have bought some of her stuff by now, namely some purification powder. Bring the purification powder to the chasms, and use the powder on the ebonstone near shadow orbs so you can get to them and break them with your hammer. That will give you some of your first magic and guns. Break three of those, and with luck you should have a flail. At this point a hugeass worm will appear. Kill it. Gather the drops, use the ores and scales to make more sweet new weapons and armor.

First I'm gonna say that you can find most of that just exploring more above and below ground and messing with the things you find, and one of them needs an NPC, so I hope you're making houses (dunno how new you are). More detailed info in the spoiler tag.

Guns you can buy from the gun dealer (Get a musket from the shadow orbs in the corruption, clear ebonstone with dynamite or purification powder, break the orb with a hammer, Get musket, build house, Gun dealer.

Jetpack is a random drop from the goblin invasion event, they happen randomly (rarely) after you break a shadow orb, or by killing a bunch of goblin scouts and making an item that can summon it (I think it's called goblin standard?)

magic drops from demons in hell, also you can find some books with magic in them in the dungeon on shelves.

jungle, look around on the surface, You'll find a jungle somewhere, that goes alllllll the way down to hell. Might have to dig a bit to get there, but it's a pretty huge area. (I believe if you find a jungle on one side of your spawn point, the dungeon is guarenteed on the other side, just keep goin.)

armor you can make, no random treasure chest armor to my knowledge.

harpies are on floating islands, they're probably the hardest stuff in the game to find on accident, and I have no specific methods to find them other then skybridges, which can interfere with meteors, so it's not the best method.

Both. Though the coins are less important as you don't really need that many shuriken, and you can get by with copper or iron armor.

I have a question!

I was digging around on a new world to find ore to bring back to my main world, and I found some strange, glowing blue rocks. I have no idea what they are, and the wiki isn't being very helpful. All I know is that my copper pickaxe cannot break it.

Demonite. Usually you need a gold pick to break it, sometimes you need a copper pick to break it, I think if you find it near the surface.

Yeah, it's demonite. You're gonna need a gold pick for that. Anywhere you see it, you need gold.

Nah, I saw some in a near surface cave once and I could mine it with a copper pick. It definatly doesn't stay mineable with copper for too far down though.

Below ground level, a Gold Pickaxe or better is required to mine demonite ore. Above ground level it can be mined by any pickaxe.
