Yea I pretty much did most of the later content with a simple musket as my ranged weapon.  Took skeletron out with it and 2 stacks of meteor shot with ease.  By the time I switched to a starcannon and flamarang I had nothing left to gain fighting bosses.

People seem to seriously underestimate that gun.  High raw single shot damage, especially with meteor shot, the rate of fire honestly isn't that low, about the same as a midrange flamarang throw, Only the minishark comes close (and that goes through 3 times the ammo to do it) until you get to the crazier guns like the phoenix blaster and starcannon.

Yeah, the musket's a surprisingly reliable weapon given how many people say it's crap. It's pretty much the best gun until you go through the dungeon.

I've only ever found 1 sky island without using a mapper. And it's because I was going up this huge hill and there just so happened to be vines there. I then used my hookshot to clear the vines and latched onto the bottom of a sky island. It was here that I acquired my utterly useless Star Fury, which I immediately placed in my piggy bank.

....Starfury was my first mana weapon, and I still love it. It shoots STARS! You can kill things outside your house without even doing anything. And it has pink sparkles. What's not to love?
Oh yeah, and a well timed shot can do 46 or so damage for 12MP.
