Just thought I'd mention: If you're crashing when trying to change settings, create a new character first. The crash is caused by Terraria attempting to access a directory that hasn't been created yet (to create the config file); creating a character first will generate the directory properly, at which point the settings can be saved correctly.  :D

yes you need a steam account, but you don't have to have steam on to play it
after you install it go to the directory where you installed Terraria and create a shortcut from the exe and put it on your desktop. Then steam doesn't open every time you run it.

I haven't hosted but can concur with the first one.

Terraria clearly requires WAY more power in general than listed in its minimum requirements. Or it's just full of memory leaks. However, hopefully they'll have a patch out soon enough.
