I don't even know just how long a changelog of 1.0 to 1.3 would be, but suffice to say that it would be substantial.

I believe 1.0 was before even hard mode. So the game's gotten approximately 10x as long, at a guess.

Defeating the Wall of Flesh is no longer the end of the game. It is merely the end of the beginning of the game. Hard mode triggers after beating the WoF and transforms the entire world into something far more deadly.

This isn't even going into Expert Mode, which is something else entirely.

As compared with 1.0, jungle has been overhauled, desert has been overhauled, ice areas have been added, mushroom caves, there's an alternate version of corruption. Then there's hard mode which makes everything in your world more badass, adds a lot of new enemies to old areas, access to new metals and such, and an anti-corruption area thats just as if not more deadly. Along with hardmode comes approximately 10000000 new bosses at various tiered levels.

There's also entirely new mechanics like fishing, a bunch of new npcs to unlock and house, wave defense things. The works.

First impression: Things look a little nicer, walked over to the new corruption and got killed by a flying cockroach, water actually splashed as I fell in, and things felt laggier. Though could be just because my graphics settings were reset.

Found a glitched out area with sapphires everywhere. Profit!

I feel like I've been digging longer too, did the world get deeper or am I just impatient?

Trying to find marble for a nice house but so far I just keep finding regular rock and granite...

I don't think the world's gotten any deeper from 1.0 to 1.3, but it is deeper depending on the size you picked at worldgen.  A large world has twice each dimension of a small world for four times the area in total.

I've always found large just too large for that reason. The depth just make's the start too boring. Not to mention sky islands are too hard to find.

Medium sized is about right for me.

Also yeah. if you've not played since 1.0 you've basically not played a majority of the game now. I think that hard mode has roughly 5 "phases" vs pre hard modes 2. And expert mode is tough but highly worth while playing through.

Just checked out some of the hardmode stuff, holy shit those bosses look scary. Also found marble! Time to go get my house going. How much of the furniture can you make out of this?

What's hard mode?

ok let me say how much has change the game since 1.0:

1. the corruption isnt the only spreading biome, there are other 2 and the jungle near end game.
2. reaching the underworld is only one of several things that happen in the first half of the game. the boss defeated there opens the other half of the game, which not only modifies the world but also makes it harder than before which means you basically have to start all over again in terms of progression (your high tier armor at that point becomes basically the equivalent of starting with wooden/copper).
3. the jungle got two new locations, not gonna spoil which ones
4. you can fish now, with an npc, gear and accesories. fish are used in potions, apart of that they dont do much.
5. several visual revamps and item changes
6. several quality of life changes to ease the gameplay like adding items to favourites, sorting inventories, dedicated slots for the grappling hook, etc..
7. there was a crossover event with Dungeon Defenders 2 which added an NPC and a tower defense event to the world, it also reinforced one of the "Classes" of the game.
8. the 1.3 updated added an "Expert" option when making a new world, Expert worlds changes several key mechanics in the game which means its harder to survive even the first night. but also increases the loot chance among with adding special reward bags to bosses which add unique stuff that you cannot get in a normal world.
9. thousands of items, equipment, blocks, mobs, etc..
10. new NPCs that give several different stuff.
11. new events and updates to old events like the Goblin Army or Blood Moons.
12. new building paths for stuff that was more or less limited to obtain.

i hope this summarizes the evolution of the game. honestly, just update it and start with a new char in an expert world. the game has changed a lot since then.
