It would also help with the whole racing through the lower tiers issue, perhaps with some ore location scaling taking effect. More iron and copper near the top, lots of iron and medium amounts of everything else in the mid layer, reaching lava you got lots of silver and gold. Better make some paths to make it down there and back up, perhaps even set up a subterranean home.

If he does make the death penalty harsher I would like some form of transportation system added. Like Hearthstones that half your max MP to craft.

Man, the devs are really going to have to pump out content updates to keep people playing the game. Once I raid the dungeon/find the jungle/get some hellstone with my current character, I have no idea what I'm going to do, and I doubt I'll be very interested in starting a brand-new character for a while.

I agree with SalmonGod- there needs to be more specialization in the game in general. Characters, currently, are differentiated only by their appearance, and it seems to me like towns are the same. They can look radically different, but mechanically, every town is just a collection of guide/merchant/nurse/dryad/demolitionist/arms dealer. In a game where characters can travel between worlds so easily, I'd like to see world generation spiced up a bit; enemies and ores with procedurally generated stats would be a neat start, and speaking as a programmer, that wouldn't be too difficult to implement. Slap on a Colorizer function to make them look unique, and all of a sudden the difference between worlds matters more than, say, one of them having easy access to a jungle.

TL;DR- Terraria is great, but so far it seems to have dubious replay value.

and how long did it take you to construct this pipe to hell?

A friend did most of the work, actually, so I don't know.  I imagine not too long, since he did it with a demonite pick.

I had already reached the point that fire imps and bone serpents were spawning, without quite breaking through into the underworld, before my friend began working on that pipe.  It took me a few hours to get that deep, but I also took a very very meandering path, fighting monsters and collecting stuff along the way, with a golden pick.

On a large world, btw.  Hell is about 4500 ft down.

Hmm that is one thing...

Harsh death penelties could spell death to large worlds.

Interesting concept.

I'm kind of disappointed that I sort of finished the game already. I mean, the game was great and I had a lot of fun, but now what? I really hope some content updates come out, otherwise I'm not sure if I'll play this game again, at least not soon. I'd still call my purchase justified though, great game.

I am personally surprised that there really wasn't much that wasn't shown in the Letsplays... and what wasn't shown was uttarly broken / overpowered.

I mean, they didn't add a fourth big boss? No extra underground treats? No pyramids? This game as it is right now is somewhat barren.

Oddly enough the MOST fun I had playing the game... Was actually when I got the hang of it and had equipment a bit over the level they expect you to have. The game is sort of a tough balance. I either feel way too powerful or way too weak.

The only reason I was hesitant to buy this game was because I feared end-game boredom and the overall lackluster-ness after finding almost everything...

That, and I've played the hell out of Minecraft already -- that too, while great fun got repetitive after a tad.

I just bought it though, I hope my purchase will be justified.

EDIT: .Net 4 Framework Installer keeps crashing, FUUUUUUU.

I'm gonna take this like I took Minecraft: Essentially a beta, or proof of concept with a solid foundation that will have updates in the future to keep me playing. I'll probably stop playing after my obsession with creating some large structure out of inconvenient materials is over, but I will come back from time to time to check up on how its doing as far as what they've added, rebalanced, etc.

Considering I've done 99% of my playing in Single Player, partially because I wanted to explore the game myself, partially because I didn't want to ruin my own progression with easily duped items, and least of all because of the lack of dedicated, stable servers (and a decent netcode behind the game, which I suspect it does not have) I do feel like I accomplished something.

Overall a damn good game for the price; I've spent more time on this than games like Mass Effect 2 already. Just needs more... substance.

I've put about 30 hours into this game and I'm still enjoying the heck out of it. Though I am playing with friends, that makes a world of difference. Totally worth it

Here is how I see Terraria

The controls are actually somewhat wonky. You can jump but you will find most enemies will intercept you. you can try to jump out of the way or over bosses... but they will intercept you most of the time. This makes your character feel rather unagile making this game rather mediocre in the control department in terms of movement. The game just doesn't like you using your movement keys to your advantage. Heck the terrain is clunky to traverse too and the games use of "deadly pits" will become VERY noticable as you play the game (and given that every hit knocks you back... you will notice)

THE BEST example of a "The game hates the fact that you can move" is the Devourer of worlds. In any other game, dodging the snake boss so you just get under him when he emerges then submerges is the way to go. NOT in Terraria. This boss actually will resurface and intersect himself just to hit you for tons of damage.

Without quick keys you will find yourself scrolling or pushing numbers FAST to try to use something. Unfortunately if your spamming to stay alive... You won't be able to.

The tougher areas are just annoying and that is really an issue. Most enemies are annoying as their primary means of defeating you. The tough areas outright harass you near chests and because the spawn rate is insane you can find yourself overwhelmed or dead if you don't IMMEDIATELY loot a chest. The game never lets you breathe in the tougher areas.

The start of the game is horrifically difficult and in order to mitigate this you will need to grind grind grind. In fact that is what you will do for a long time.

There is more... but If I keep typing people will get angry at me. Please understand that I tally up negative things rather quickly and a game like Terraria would get a huge list. It is a game that wants you to work hard for little pay off until the final level where you become insanely overpowered.

No, I love this game, but would never get angry at another for criticism. In truth the controls are wonky a little, sometimes a lot, although I feel the giant worm is in fact a very bad example of this. Not only is dodging he's initial strike a complement to the controls, but the fact that he comes up for a second strike when your trapped adds to the challenge of the boss, rather than is an effect of the controls. If you want to show how blocky it can be, ask somebody to climb a hill with no extra jumping gear.

The problem is Max White is that the Devourer of worlds SHOULD be a boss you should be able to use great skill on for FUN. In any ordinary game this would be an awsome boss! In a great game it would be a boss you could possibly do without taking a single hit.

But the game pretty much, unless you REALLY rig things, says "no skills allowed" and basically makes your movements moot.

The fact that you are better off walking INTO the boss because you would take less damage that way, makes it poor construction.

also thanks for not getting angry.

The Devourer of worlds as he is constructed is just an resource draining boss because the game doesn't give you the tools to adequetly combat the boss at any point.

He is to me the largest indicator of the game's somewhat lackluster design frame. Skeletor is too but he is outright horrible... while Devourer of worlds you can at least see how he COULD be a great boss. (Eye of Cthuhu is fine if you know that Shrukens are basically required. He is a bit underwhelming though and VERY unfair if you don't have shrukens or Tier 3 arrows, or Tier 2 bullets)

Hmm, I found Eater to be dodgeable. Much more then Eyethulhu anyway, and much much more then Skeletor. As far as I can see he is the easiest boss, although I did fight him with the bottled cloud, and the double jump makes getting out of the way a lot easier.

So I guess that answers part of the problem. You start off with zero utility. You can hardly jump to save your life, and your slow to get around. Doing something is a bitch of a task. But then you start to get neat little artefacts that  grant abilities and life gets easier. You can jump that cliff, or grapple to that roof, or swim across that lake, or fly to that floating island.

So yea, this is a "Grind by exploration" kind of game, that keeps you hooked because the next cave might have that heart crystal you need, ad the next day might bring that invasion you want, and the next serpent might drop the flail you desire, and I'm ok with that. It is character building, and that will always be a little grindy, but not as much as some other games.

I personally find Devourer to be the best boss of the bunch mind you (the worst being Skeletor... who fights like a ragdoll)

The problem is that for the best boss, he isn't all that good.

It's grind without the mundane

And I also found devourer of worlds dodge-able.  Not consistently, but you just had to guess at which side of him to dodge to in order not to end up underneath him.

Also, I used boomerang to take on the eye of cthulhu
