So, apparently there is a new update out. 1.2.2.

The highlights appear to be the Frost Moon, increased variety in presents, further nerfing of the Specter Armor (and other regen-per-hit items), and further buffing of the Shroomite Armor. Plus various goodies and bugfixes.

I don't think Terraria and Starbound are even competing all that much, to be honest. They're sufficiently different that you can enjoy playing them both.

Heh, maybe. I've gotten to the grinding event horizon in Terraria, though, so I'll wait for the wiki to get more filled out before i check out the changes.

There was, but the "event horizon" isn't in it. Just what I listed above.

I gotta say, I view the whole Starbound/Terraria/Minecraft thing exactly how people think people view it: they're the same game experience. You explore, you dig, you collect, you build.

Minecraft isn't as pretty and vanilla is boring but with mods it's got more content than Terraria.

Starbound has some cool gimmicks but cmon, it's Terraria in spaace.

I suspect people will play all of them and then, having sampled all their dark delights, go back to whatever one they had the most fun with.

I just can't bring myself to care about more garish deco items and yet another skeletron boss that fires homing projectiles at you.

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

Starbound is indeed very strong in cool gimmicks. And loads of content.

The new Terraria just doesn't look like it adds anything that isn't basically more of the same but with different numbers.

Small content update, but well, I'm still happy receiving an update like that once in a while. Especially as it seems that this update was just the work of one dev over the last few weeks. But the real fun is coming next year: the Lunar update... :)

Sure, everything is the same if you boil it down like that and don't mention where the focus is. Minecraft and Doom are exactly the same, you explore dungeons and kill monsters. There's a massive difference in how Starbound, Terraria, and Minecraft are actually played, with or without mods. Minecraft has you primarily exploring and building, with a side dish of digging. Starbound has you exploring and fighting stuff with building and digging as means to an end, at least in my experience. Terraria is somewhere in the middle.

I've always thought of Terraria as a game where you explore and mine so you can fight.
Minecraft is a a game where you explore and fight so you can build.
Starbound sounds like it's a game where you mine and fight so you can explore.

At the end of the day, they each offer unique experiences with unique end results.

I thought Minecraft was a game where you fight so you can mine, and Terraria was a game where you built so that you could explore.
Also building in Starbound is pointless because revisiting your old home is a waste of fuel. Unless you get that Sandbox Ship mod.
