Marksdwarves won't get more ammo - DF2010 version

Is there a way to tell markdwarves to restock ammo after running out of it - ammo that is just in the next room - rather than pathing all the way through my fortress to the enemies who are stuck in my serpentine of death and club them with their crossbow?

This is expecially useful in long sieges...

Also, how do I check how many/which type bolts they are currently equipped with?

Naked dwarves remove the need to produce more clothing, which means more of your pig tails can be brewed into booze.
I think this is less a problem and more an expression of dwarven priorities.

You need to assign them ammunition in the military menu.

You can look at individual dwarves with 'v', then check their inventory with 'i'.

Indeed they have ammo, but last time they run out of them during a siege, they charged at the enemies with foam in their mouth, using crossbows as make-shift clubs and miraculously escaping with only one casualty.
I don't have problems stocking them with ammo, I have problems re-stocking them with ammo.

Ah, I see. As far as I know, they won't restock until they have no path to the engaged enemy. Give them bismuth bronze crossbows and train their hammerdwarf skill, or lock them in.

Bismuth bronze? Could do, but why not silver? Isn't that better (heavier)?

They won't reload if they can see the enemy. You need to micromanage them - when they're about to run out of ammo (keep checking the quiver in their inventory) cancel all orders and put them to Inactive alert level. Assuming you already have a burrow that instructs all civilians to retreat into a safe area, the now-civilian marksdwarves will run away instead of towards the enemies once they run out of ammo. Make sure the only way for them to run away scared is towards your ammo pile and not into the fight. Once they are safely out of view of the enemies, tell them to station at the ammo pile (or anywhere still out of vision of the enemies) and they'll go reload.

Awesome! I will be trying that next siege. The area they are firing from has everything - it should work like this.

I will consider writing a markdwarves guide after all this, I have quite some experience now from all the testing I've been doing...

Silver is heavier, but it can't be made into crossbows in vanilla DF.
