Necro's
« on: May 16, 2011, 03:06:19 am »

Since all the exiting updates in the news about the living dead i've been wondering:

How are we going to deal with this ? If Toady actually manages to animate parts then i see a real problem for a fort with even a decent sized military holding back the hordes.

Is it too early to tell that when a necromancer enters the embark rectangle your bassicly screwed, or can we discuss this ?

How would you deal with the undead ?

My guess is they won't come from the caverns (OR DO THEY??!?!?!) so you would have to flood the entire surface area ? Isn't that a tat too erm.... macho ? :D

Well, broken arms remain broken, and thus less effective. Cutting off someone's arms still renders it's body armless.

It's probably going to be the same as normal combat, but harder since they keep coming back, but less "able" every time they do. It also depends on whether "destroying the brain" works with zombies as in some lore, that should keep em down.

Real problem here are distractions - if you army spends time obliterating reanimated noses and ears, functional undead can and will tear them apart.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I have a feeling all of that will depend on how the dice happened to roll when the undead 'castes' were generated for each world. Remember, Toady did say there was a headless zombie dog - that hardly seems encouraging for trying to destroy the brain to subdue it.

Like bees, grass, eggs and damn near anything else - any new feature will be weaponised by the community. It just so happens undead are much easier to weaponise even without having direct access to the ability to raise the dead yourself.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.
