From where did the cannibal elves rumor come from?
« on: May 15, 2011, 08:17:38 pm »

Just curious, how do people know that elves eat their own kind?
Has anyone seen them do so before?
Or is it just something in the raws?

It's just Toady's (Tarn's) elves.
Or that's  as far as I know.

I think it's because elves are coded to "eat" the corpses of their slain (sentient) foes in worldgen. I'm not sure if you can actually see it happen, but you can read about it in the Legends mode.

The civ entity raws for elves have the tag [ETHIC:EAT_SAPIENT_KILL:ACCEPTABLE] that makes the eat sentient foes that they have defeated, even other elves. Presumably to gain their power.

Or maybe just out of a "screw it, meat's meat." outlook. Or a mix of the two, more likely.

Not eating them would be wasteful.

While they don't actualy do it in game (yet), elves do devour defeated enemies during worldgen, from humans to demons. Just check legends.

It's a feature of Wood Elves in The Elder Scrolls series too. Their religion is that they have to eat the corpse of a slain foe within a few days, their family are allowed to help if they can't manage the whole thing by themselves. Don't know if that influenced the Toady or not tho.

If you look in legends, most of the wars that start with elves (besides wars with goblins) occur because elves abhor lying, and consider it a crime almost as terrible as murder, and will wage wars against dwarves or humans that protect liars from their "justice".  Elves, meanwhile, will eat a sentient kill (even other elves), although the exact reason behind this is not explained (possibly because they are protectors of nature, and "won't let any part of the animal go to waste",) and humans and dwarves wage war against elves based upon their eating of sentient dead.

Hence, the canon reason that dwarves and humans hate/start wars with elves in DF is because of this "cannibalism", since ethics are the driving force of warfare in this game.

That's the canon reason for warfare. The cannon reason probably won't be included until we get gunpowder. :P

Grammar nazi-ing aside, that's a damn good summary, though I should point out that an awful lot of wars start over the treatment of plants as well.

Well, with the new update it will become obvious that the elves are eating corpses to prevent them from being zombified.

I'm guessing that that won't stop it from happening, because who knows what bugs this game might have.
