If a hollow tube is breached but no dwarf is around to see it, does HFS spawn?
Technically speaking, no.

HFS spawns when you can see it. (DFreveal and all that)

A thought occurred, is it possible to mod the range of reveal? Like when you dig into the caverns, you reveal more caverns for a certain amount of tiles away, can you reduce this? In this way, you could mine the candy tube and never trigger the HFS... I think. And it would better simulate a dark cavern.
Even if you could, it wouldn't work. You could see the inside of the tube. If you can see the next tile infront of you, you've gone too far.

"I have been quite content lately. I have witnessed death lately. I have mourned the loss of a child lately. I have mourned the loss of a friend lately. I have taken joy in slaughter recently. I have been comforted by a nice waterfall lately.

I like rose quartz, microcline, pigs, and elves for their grace. I enjoy elf meat, and when possible prefer to cosume dwarven wine.

I am super-dwarvenly strong, I am very agile, and I am quite resistant to disease. However, I am very frail and prone to anger. I am growing used to tragedy. I require alchohol to get through the working day."

Necro, why bother asking? Just call Friend Computer.

How come my beard can sense one missing sock miles above me on the surface, but it can't even tell me I am walking towards a giant cave spider until I am tangles in webs being stabbed by teeth?

In a way, I think yes. Bugs have been reported where spontaneous cave-ins happened right upon embark at some yet unseen location; sometimes, it involves... you guess it... it involves the HFS. Now, whether or not it really does reveal it in a sense...

Dwarfs have an adaption to the inner ear that allows them to detect changes in air pressure and measure how far underground they are.
They also have an adaption in their feet, so they can tell if any large mass like a cavein moves and causes vibrations. very usefull for knowing when to start running.

Urist 2: "Yea?"
Urist 1: "You know how we keep stuffing these cats into the same cage?"
Urist 2: "Yeeeaaah...?"
Urist 1: "How's that work when there's already 12 goblins, 6 trolls, a bronze colossus and a dragon in it?"
Urist 2: pauses "....  let's go on break and get a drink."

With the stuff we keep doing to the dwarves, I'd need a drink to get through the working day too.

Well, constructions don't burn no matter their material, therefore trees are actually built with - [C].
... probably by invisible elves.
