Dwarfen enemys: question
« on: May 15, 2011, 06:52:10 pm »

i just sumbled onto something when i was going trough my engraveing and what i found was quite funny

But then is started wondering about what i saw when i was building my dwarfs rooms so they would be estatic forever but then i rememberd

Here is the question, Is this just something that happens from time to time or is this something that the game looks for and then decides what it engraves?

If the engraver has a grudge against someone, then there is a chance they'll engrave that dwarf surrounded by the verimin disliked by them.

It happens quite often really. Sometimes it'll even say "Urist McUrist is screaming." or "Urist McUist looks terrified."

It's a dwarven joke.

LOL I COVERED YOUR ROOM IN ENGRAVINGS OF THE THING YOU HATE!

I find it really interesting what causes engravings

In my latest fort, our outpost liasion was fired and replaced. My leader liked this a lot, he didn't like the other liasion. He proceeded to cover much of the dining room with images of the old liasion looking dejected or crying or surrounded by dwarves. I found it really funny. Its like dwarven political satire.

While those with grudges will do this, sometimes dwarves will do it to their friends as well, kind of a good natured ribbing.

Not too unlike how my friends and I would draw pictures of each other being run over, or fed to zombies and things like that.

Same thing for statues and artifacts. It's largely random. Sometimes you'll get a picture of a duck, or a circle, and sometimes you'll get an engraving related to how Urist killed a goblin in the year 246 with a kitten as a club, or something bizarre and oddly specific like that.

I figure that they're the dwarven equivalent of political cartoons. Or maybe just a way for the engraver to let off some steam. You can't stop the mayor from having you beat for failing to make 3 bismuth items, but you sure as hell can make fun of him for being terrified of flies, the bastard.
