What A Decision!
« on: May 15, 2011, 04:57:14 pm »

Ok... time to chose the Baron. Oh, wait. Problem.

I have 2 Dwarves, out of about 80, who have no real job or skills. So... the Baron has to be one of those right?

Peasant 1 likes many things. Including Raw Adamantine.
Peastan 2 likes many things. Including Slade.

Shite.

I think it's the way towns develop now. In the beginning, people move into a town. Then they start producing tables, which results in more and more tables. Soon tables represent a significant portion of the population, they start lobbying for new laws and regulations, putting people to greater and greater disadvantage...

Why does it have to be a useless dwarf? The baron will still continue to do all his old labours. I picked my legendary gem cutter and haven't looked back since.

Only thing is that I don't think the baron gets replaced if he dies, so it's probably best not to pick one of the more hazardous professions like mining, masonry or any soldiering.

Socks inspire the same sort of emotions in dwarfs that Helen of Troy inspired in the Achaean Greeks. Although it is said that Helen's face launched a thousand ships, socks have surely launched a million ultimately-fatal Store Owned Item tasks.

I love marksdwarf barons; they keep training, pull their weight in wartime while keeping safe and you can spend an afternoon making royal archery courses for them.

My Duke likes iron, picks, and slabs. He still pulls double duty as the broker and a legendary furnace operator. Plus melting down goblinite gives him good thoughts, so he's low-maintenance.

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

My Baroness (Now Duchess) I picked blindly, without getting a chance to look at their likes and dislikes.

She asks for nothing but Pig Iron items and refuses to export pig iron.

Considering I'm on a Marbe goldmine and found plenty of Iron Ore I think I'm good.  Have been for years. :3

Barons are supposed to be succeeded by their eldest child, though I don't know if anyone's kept a fort running long enough to see this happen.

Never used Dwarf Therapist, mods or tilesets in all the years I've been playing.
I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

My Baron's children rarely outlive their parents, so I can't verify this either.

You know, raw addy and slade haven't been mandatable materials for a while now (since 0.31.13 IIRC, or whenever it what that ores were moved from the METAL_TEMPLATE to the STONE_TEMPLATE).

Give the title to lover. Lovers don't have children. My mayor asked the title to be given to her lover, an act of nepotism (in fact I choose blindly, but it worked that way). Then she was not elected to mayor, some newcomer was. So now duke has lover which is a former mayor, no children, and they'll apparently never marry.

Anyway, since even duke likes to work, I'd choose a guy with good demands, and wouldn't care about anything else. My duke is a very good cook, wood cutter, farmer and so on and these activities make him happy.

Lovers become married but only if they're given lots of idle time to socialise further. One requirement for marriage is that they don't have conflicts in religion so if they worship different deities they'll need extra time to sort out which religion the family will follow.
