Roads
« on: May 15, 2011, 05:32:18 am »

http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Road
so I was reading the wiki article on roads, and I'm not clear on on aspect of it. If a road is built to the edge of the map, does it mean caravans will always enter the map at that point? Or is it only to give them a pathed exit?

Roads ensure no trees grow on them, making them an always valid path for wagons. In 40d, caravans didn't seem to have a preference for moving on roads.

What he said.

Of course, I find they make a nice aesthetic and what is Dwarf Fortress if not about aesthetics?

Instead of building proper roads I usually end up stone flooring, as a way of doing something with all that stone in a hurry (I can't stand having piles of stones all over the place). I've always assumed that the end result is no different from a road, except that it can't all be destroyed in one go.

I usually just build roads for aesthetics. I like to line them with the corpses of elves, so people don't think it's a human settlement up for grabs.

Roads consume far less stone than floors do. It usually doesn't look as good for a large area, but it's much faster and keeps plants from growing where you want the path to be open. The end result between the two processes is roughly the same, it just takes longer to get to one end.

Roads connected to the edge of the map do not ensure caravans coming in there. I've tried it.

d-b-h.

Hide the stone. I go CRAZY if I see the stuff laying around, but by hiding it, I forget it's there since it looks all nice and clean now.

Dump the stone. It's not laying around, it gives the useless drunkards migrants something to do, and it's actually in one usable location, preferably near a mason's 'shop.

That is, if you want to use the (debatable) exploit of quantum stockpiles, aka a whole bunch of stuff moved to 1 place.

Depending on the skill of your architect and the value of the material, roads can massively increase the architectural value of your fort in a hurry and cause happy thoughts. Constructed floors will increase fort value as well, but by a tiny amount.

The biggest thing is that roads are necessary if you want your monarch to show up.

You need a certain "road value". I tend to make mine out of some semi-expensive material like billon, because it's quite a lot to attain with just worthless stone.

You don't need actual roads for that. I hate roads and don't build them. Bridges built outside increase road value. Even some bridges built inside seem to do it, but I don't know exactly how game determines whether the bridge qualifies. I know that outside bridges usually add more to value than their parts, and these inside which work add not so much.

Huh. This'll make the fortress defence schematic I'm toying with unexpectedly valuable.

Gonna have to make those bridges out of gold...just to be pimp.

Roads made from stone blocks look identical to stone floors.
