Making gloves...
« on: May 14, 2011, 08:16:29 pm »

Very quick question. If I tell my dudes to "forge steel gauntlet" or "make leather glove" or whatever, do they only make one or do they a left and a right one (if they do, does it take two pieces of material)? What about boots and shoes? Are they different because they don't have left-right versions?

It only takes a single unit of material, and you get a full set - left AND right! It's a real bargain! :D

Shoes, boots, gloves and gauntlets are always produced in pairs from a single unit of material.

On a related note, when I'm setting a uniform for my soldiers should I tell them to wear "steel gauntlet" or "steel gauntlet, steel gauntlet"?

One of them, unless you're assigning specific pieces.

Are you sure? I thought, relatively sure, you only got a single one at a time. :o

I used to have the single-equip problem, but in the current version double assignment seems unnecessary. Try it without and see what they put on, just to be sure.

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

No, I thought make orders made a single, but wear orders were for both.

Make orders will make a pair of grasper clothes/armour, left and right, even if you're playing a custom race with non-directional grasping mouths that embark/migrate with non-directional grasper clothing.

This thread has taught me that I have eternally made twice as many gloves and boots than I needed.

Your dwarves had wider choice, that's good. I intentionally make more to have better quality. For 50 soldiers I order 60 high boots, and they choose 50 best ones. When I have time I order more, so they can upgrade.
