Dwarf fort is art!
« on: May 14, 2011, 06:43:00 pm »

Hiya
I've been playing dwarf fort for a little while, and had lots of fun with it, trying to make the dwarfs not die.
For an art assignment i was given, i had to show how a minimalist style could be expressive so i talked with my teacher and he allowed me to use dwarf fort as a source study. I recently got my marks back, and i ended up doing very well for that project!

Thanks dwarf fort, you are officially art!

But, technically "art" is by defenition anything produced by a worker, so everything is art.

A definition that encompasses everything is meaningless; definition is the setting of boundaries.  Art doesn't really have a "technical" definition, anyway; what defines art is a highly contested debate and is mutable, changing with time and culture.

I'd say that Dwarf Fortress is art, though.  Art is, imo, a labor of love.

Indeed, I'd say that DF is a sort of epic landmark that nobody knows about in game development. It encompasses a huge amount of love, hard work, determination and epic ideas. It's got magma in it. Therefore, it's art.

I think it's the way towns develop now. In the beginning, people move into a town. Then they start producing tables, which results in more and more tables. Soon tables represent a significant portion of the population, they start lobbying for new laws and regulations, putting people to greater and greater disadvantage...

I'd consider DF closer to being an artistic medium coupled with an art generator moreso than art in and of itself.

Indeed, I'd say that DF is a sort of epic landmark that nobody knows about in game development.
Every dev team that I've interacted with much is aware of DF. Most don't play it, but everyone considers its niche and pricing model to be at least very interesting.

Yar. I'm sure that if you asked any body they would eventually come to the conclusion that art is anything that produces emotional reaction, so yes, Dwarf Fortress is defeinatly art.

Dwarf Fortress is being featured at the MoMA, Museum of Modern Art in New York
http://wp.moma.org/talk_to_me/whos-talking/worlds/

Quote
Talk to Me is an exhibition on the communication between people and objects that will open at The Museum of Modern Art on July 24th 2011. It will feature a wide range of objects from all over the world, from interfaces and products to diagrams, visualizations, perhaps even vehicles and furniture, by bona-fide designers, students, scientists, all designed in the past few years or currently under development.

It was also the subject of a masters thesis at MIT: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=57554.0

Yes, and one that far too few people are actually good at.  It's such a shame that people resort to using trolling to simply mean "stating contentious statements" now.  But now is not the time to reminisce about great fake arguments.

Dwarf fortress is definitely expressive and artistic.  I'm not sure it's minimalist art but I'm not entirely sure what counts as minimalist art.  I'm thinking of like, a painting with a few lines in a single color that might evoke say, sadness or anger through its shape.  Each little thing in dwarf fortress contains a specific amount of information, and there's a lot of little things in any image.  On the one hand, you can look at each animal and read its description, see what kinds of grass are growing, and check the depth of water at any given moment.  On the other hand, you can see a field of grass on a hillside, with a herd of wild horses wandering around beside the river, from an image made of a few various symbols in a few different colors.  But there's sooo much.

Man, I'm not even all that interested in art(or I'd be able to express my opinion more clearly) and this is still fascinating.

It is, actually. The problem is just that it's by it's very nature nonconsentual, nonobvius (Think modern art; most people are unable to recognize even great works of it as art), and most importnantly subject to the law that 90% of evrything is ****. This means 99% or trolling is people being forced against their will to consume bad art or art they cant distinguish from bad.

There is, however, a few ways to vitness the good, artsy side of trolling: you can go to sites like Art of Trolling where filtering means you get only 80% or so crap rather than 99% crap, or you can study fictionalized depictions of trolling, such as can be found in Homestuck (to many examples to count) or Celestia from MLP:FiM!

The book Ender's Game contains a little a bit some a lot of trolling.
