Toady, can you please put a development version so players can decide wether to continue a certain feature or not after trying it?

When a fey dwarf demands dragon bones, mermaid leather and an elephant's good nature, you can't just give him a piece of schist and say "Well, what are you waiting for?"

Dwarf Fortress is not open-source.

I don't think he's asking for the source code. He's asking to see the current progress of DF. Which is an unreasonable demand, considering DF is a FREE game. Patience is a virtue, Bien.

Well, yeah I think that we all know Taody's answer there : it'll be ready when it'll be ready.

I don't see much link with the fact that it is free or not. Just, it is not ready yet and broken from everywhere. So before releasing his little baby, he prefers to make it look correctly.

From the time Bay12games announced that DF would be released, and its first publication, there has been close to one year. (or more ?). And development had started 2 year earlier. So yeah, with DF, patience is virtue !

And more to the point, game is simply not playable atm, expecting useful feedback on a version that seems to be a regression to players isn't exactly a great development plan.

You don't get to decide what goes in the game and what doesn't, that's solely Toady's decision.

Also, doubting Toady will surely lead to an early departure from the earthly world.

Everything I say should be taken with atleast 1 tsp. of salt, and another liter of Dwarven Wine is recommended.

Yeah, you wouldn't really be able to test the new features thoroughly right now, since dwarves don't yet drink water, though you might be able to get around this by foraging and making alcohol in the beginning.  Anyway, not quite the game I had in mind.

From looking at the "back to the dwarf game" thread in the curses forum, which contained the first DF movies (I had mentioned DF a bit before, but the big wait started around this time), it was about two years until the first release, and there were a few years of on-and-off development before that.  This current revision shouldn't take so long.  I guess we'll be rolling up on five months by the time I move.

As much as I now despise the guy, Derek Smart had a saying which I found abjectly hilarious:

IRWIRARNIAR

It's Ready When It's Ready And Right Now It Ain't Ready

You just have to imagine it's some Celt saying it.
