So I used DFusion to possess a gila monster monster and terrorize the place.
Then later I felt uneasy and was in a cave.
Then I was a giant toad.
What the hell?!
Now I'm a troglodyte.

So which command did you use to possess the gila monster?
Was it the drop down adventure change in the tool menu, the adv_tools change adventurer or was it the one with the Question mark?
I ask this because Dfusion had this issue before with random swapping though it's been fixed with the "?change adv?" command. though using this command then saving the game will cause the game to go back to swapping your body for every time you travel I called this event Quantum leap.
you should dive into Dfusion for more help on fiddling around in adventure mode

I know when I use the change adventurer command, I have to choose 'stay' or something, or that happens.

oh then that's the problem "Stay" is really the old version of the adventure swap command but instead of swapping back it keeps you in the same body. This is only to be used for freeing up dfusion for other commands while being in another body or to experience what you where going through.
you should have used the legend stay command if you want to fast travel while in the gila.
though it only last until you save the game then it reverts back to the temp swap.

a fun thing to do is using the Adv swap on a companion or stranger and talk to the adventurer then flip back while on the talk screen and you get your adventurer talking to him/her self which could lead to getting a quest from your self to checking on the surroundings for any info kinda like the player talking to the player character in a meta sense.
