CANNOT be impoved by magma?
« on: May 13, 2011, 06:51:06 am »

Post your things that (Armok help us) CANNOT be impoved by Magma here, and let the next person point out how they can be (as much !!fun!! as possible).

I'll start.
A washing system to clean dwarves going into hospital. Salt water washes over then, cleaning them, then out some grates the far side.

Forgotten Beasts seem to be akin to Toady playing Dwarven Roulette with your fortress, as they can be anything from harmless giant worms made of mud to necrotic-gas spewing nigh-invunerable iron hydras of doom.

After thorough testing, my scientists have discovered that rocks tends to be much cleaner than dwarves.  Therefore, an ideal cleaning system would convert all users into rocks.  Just add a couple more bauxite floodgates there...

My situation:
I am building a defense system to protect my alcohol from thieves.

This can be improved by magma. Just think of it as an automated trainer for your medical dwarves. :-)

Seems to be the way with things on this forum; if an invention doesn't involve death by magma then you know someone's going to go out of their way to make sure it does involve death by magma... then it gets acknowledged as being a great invention.

Thieves won't survive stealing alcohol if it's on fire. Sounds like a pretty good defence system to me.

Socks inspire the same sort of emotions in dwarfs that Helen of Troy inspired in the Achaean Greeks. Although it is said that Helen's face launched a thousand ships, socks have surely launched a million ultimately-fatal Store Owned Item tasks.

My submission: A well and plumbing system

Deffo can be improved by more magma. A dwarf eating a !!pump helmet!! will be well-fed for the rest of his life.

A aquifer-draining pumpstack?

Thanks for the suggestion, but Number4 is correct: [...] it would be easier and more predictable to just be a racist.

A fortress in a perpetually-freezing biome made out of naturally-frozen ice, NOT constructed ice walls.

Use magma to plug the aquifer, no more need for the pump stack.

My situation: ORTHOCLASE EVERYWHERE.

Chuck it all in the magma.  Use orthoclase as a mould to sculpt an Obsidian fortress with the magma.  Assuming you have water.

Magma. Can you improve magma with magma? I think not. Feel free to prove me wrong.

I just realized two things. 1. For the Win and F___ the World have the same initials. 2. They have the same meaning in Dwarf Fortress.

You can improve 4/7 magma by making it 7/7 magma, or two tiles of magma by making it four tiles of magma.

My fortress has nearly died, and I am making a legendary dining room to keep my few remaining dwarves alive.

Why is my post overlooked? Too hard to subvert for you elves?  :P

Alternately, just for the kicks, some creature, FB or other, made of fire.
By which I mean you need to kill it, or else it will eat dwarves. Which might not be a bad thing in itself, but let's think simply in terms of killing the damn thing.
