I can't wait to mod in sieges of vampires turned from your former dwarves and enemy goblins, until at last the Vampire Emperor himself comes in his dark glory.

So, I am guessing some guy will wander onto the map with some corpses, raise them, summon a tower some how, and attack.

Or he or she will use all the dead goblins most forts have laying around. Which is odd, since if their corpses of an enemy are scattered about your fort, shouldn't the necromancer realize it will end with death for him or her?
If I'm reading Toady right, he'll have the corpses pre-animated before he arrives. In fact, there may not even be a necromancer, just a horde of mindless dead moving towards your fort.

But you must admit, the prospect of a trap avoiding, lockpicking necromancer sneaking into your fort and pathing to your crypts to ruin your day sounds like a boat-load of !!FUN!!.

...most adorable necromancer ever.  I see no reason why not, except that apparently, necromancy is learned from a god of death, and if kobolds have no such religious options, they cannot gain it.  They might steal a tablet from a human, though, who knows.

Yeah they have skills and can learn from combat. But written knowledge seems different. I think we'll have to wait until the update to find out

To be fair, no one has written knowledge right now.  No civ or creature ever reads or writes.

Just a small thought, but the prospect of having the dead come back to life makes having fully sealed crypts something of a priority, in my eyes - wall them up once occupied, unless you want to be attacked from within by a hundred skeletal dwarves...

Socks inspire the same sort of emotions in dwarfs that Helen of Troy inspired in the Achaean Greeks. Although it is said that Helen's face launched a thousand ships, socks have surely launched a million ultimately-fatal Store Owned Item tasks.

If you built your crypts with this in mind you could set it up so any reanimated dwarfs become marksdorf/army practice fodder.

I think the necromancer won't be able to reanimate those in coffins and with memorials, but that's probably not going to happen. Plus, it'd be annoying, memorializing every single dead goblin who perished at the foot of your gate.
On the military practice on dorf zombies, that should give the families and friends of the newly-risen targets a bad thought, though.
Urist McBlah is miserable. His pet was used as an archery target recently. His wife was used for target practice recently.
And it would be pretty awesome if you just left a dragon corpse or whatever sitting around and the necromancer comes up and thinks "oh man look a dragon this is going to be so tight" and raises it to attack you with again.

On a side note, I hope dead zombies (the ones you kill) won't be able to be reanimated. That would be so ridiculous: Kill them all, they all get revived. Kill them all again, more revives for everyone. And so on.

I hope that another update will add smarts to Dwarven weaponry, I.E. using an axe for living things, mauls and blunt weapons for undead things. Imagine, Urist the Vampire Slayer..... :o :o

Well, to actually use those weapons when it gives the dwarf a tactical advantage.

I'm sure Toady understand what a bother it is to abandon a fortress, so we most likely won't have to. A final showdown with the necromancer making their appearance sounds nice.

I could add him to my collection! I wonder if he can raise undead from a cage. (I collect generals and other civ leaders who come to invade my fort (a bit easier than it sounds as generals often move faster than normal soldiers)). I like to think that all the seiges I keep getting are attempts to get them back.)
