I currently use something in between a dormitory and individual rooms. I have beds 2 spaces apart, and make 3x3 rooms out of them. I give Dwarfs cabinets too. Works for me. I don't assign individual beds other than to nobles, or a few bedrooms and dining room for my metalworkers, I made close to magma.

I give them private rooms, AND cabinets. Man. My place is cushy. Plus, my fortresses last 12 years on average. Dayum.

I am like the pimp of DF.

BEWARE. Last fortress I had everyone with a room, cabinet, possessions, no miasma, and everyone stil threw a tantrum :( YOU CANNOT STOP IT.

Not the thread for it, but I am made happy right now because a Titan just flamed all over some goblin siege parties way before I'm ready. Shit was so Urist.

Its interesting that people do bedrooms in lots of different ways, personally I make 3x3 rooms completely engraved and with 4 masterwork statues for everyone, even cheesemakers. Then again I do pretty much every space in my fortresses like that, if it aint smooth and covered with engravings, it aint a part of my fortress. Like 95% of my fortresses is bedrooms and fancy dining rooms with waterfall entrances.

Rooms really aren't that hard, and I do it the same way every time.
3x3 for everyone, nobles get 2 split rooms, 3x5.
Usually at the end of hallways. Really easy to span levels and not drastically increase distance to the main area. Space isn't a concern here and it ensures there are lots of stones and sometimes minerals available.

Whenever new immigrants show up I just make another hallway, quickly queue up a few beds/doors/cabinets and away we go.
I also smooth them, engrave the nobles, and there is rarely any issues at all with bad thoughts or anything. All the nice rooms, legendary dining rooms, etc seem to keep them ecstatic most times.

But yeah..never assign except when someone needs something special.
You can see my typical noble room on the second picture lower right.
The left one is the manager.
The baron has a really big throneroom all to himself.

Okay, here are the shocking accomodations of my 19 dwarves.

In case you wonder: that's a "dining room" of 5x5, dug out of raw soil, with shabby furniture. The little office next to it belongs to the bookkeeper. The "dormitory" is a bed placed right in the middle of the main entrance. There is a dwarf sleeping in the dirt next to it, indicating the extension of this "dormitory".

The 1x1 meeting zone happens to be off screen, and it's outside. They often get caught in the rain.

Now, some of you might exclaim "tantrum time!!!" at the sight of this, but a quick glance at the happiness levels of the little suckers in Dwarf Therapist tells me the following:

Migration Wave #1
Lowest: 1479 points (ecstatic)
Highest: 2460 points (ecstatic)

Migration Wave #2 (only 1 dwarf remained from 8)
Lowest and Highest: 2939 points (ecstatic)

Wave #3
Lowest: 1070 points (ecstatic)
Highest: 2952 points (ecstatic)

Children:
Lowest: 423 points (ecstatic)
Highest: 2070 points (ecstatic)

The low ecstasy of that child is because it happens to have been out of the baby stage for only a couple of weeks. Babies become content or even unhappy during that first year of booze withdrawal and lack of social contacts.

This amount of happiness points can't be thrown into a tantrum spiral, not even if you get half of the little pests assassinated.

If you start to hand them little individual rooms, they'll prefer to idle in these, abandoning their social activities, and thus getting much less happy points.

And if I on the other hand can be bothered to give them a good dining room and a somewhat more decent dormitory, then I guess I could also just leave the corpses of their assassinated friends lie around and have them witness the decay of their friends. Without having tantrum spirals.

Right now, they think that they are dining in a "pretty decent dining room", by the way.

I have an excuse for these shocking accomodations in year 4 of this fortress, by the way. I've been busy with that 5 z-level deep conglomerate aquifer.

I've honestly never seen them idle in their rooms. But I tend to give them lots of other rooms and sculpture gardens. Bronze colossi zoos, etc.

It seems to work for You fine, and this kind of setup is probably common during first year, but I see a problem with this. To have social activities, like "talked to a friend recently", you need some idlers, and even if you have them, some Dwarfs will still be too preocupied with work or military training to take part in it. In my forts I notice happiness decline with time, even tough I improve food, booze, rooms, mist generators, dinig room, etc. They don't tantrum, they are mostly in 100-300 range.

Wait, 1x1 social zone, as the only meeting area? Would this mean, all idlers interact with each other, and get good thoughts form it? It might just work.

Ok let's bring out the numbers, the 40d version of the Thoughts wiki page lists exactly how much value the various thoughts have. The death of a loved one is at most -50 happiness points, with a further -20 for letting them rot without a coffin. Some 30~40 dwarves would have to die before tantrum happens, but a 1x1 meeting zone makes EVERYONE friends so it won't matter which dwarves are killed.

In effect, a 1x1 meeting zone is a quantum party. It requires idlers to generate the happiness, but if you don't have much work that needs doing then this is an excellent way to generate quantum happiness. Problem is, you need to keep doing it - the conversation thoughts need to be renewed whereas the relationships will stay. This means you must force your dwarves to idle every now and then no matter how big your fort grows. At least the quantum happiness will scale up as the population increases.

I tend to make 2x3 rooms with a bed, a master work door(yes one for every one, I figure it a good exercise for my masons and a way to get rid of stone), a cabinet and a chest. And because my masons are so buffed from making all those doors the cabinets and chests tend to be pretty good too.

Yeah that's definitely a way to get rid of stone but how do you get rid of doors?

How do you get rid of anything?

Magma of course :D

Also, not true of the tantruming after 30-40. Just last week I lost a fortress to the spiral after a mere 7 died...... All at once. And one of them were really popular. And then the guard brained a popular peasant just because he was the first to tantrum.

But I gave them all masterwork furniture, cabinets, personal bedrooms (It took 12 years but I got them their 272 bedrooms.) and enough variety in the food to make even Urist McRamsey chuffed as a chickensplosion. But I couldn't stop it. Beware its deadly blood! ;_;

Forgotten beast, thou art the bane of my existence. I have chosen to just leave z-levels 15+ completely untouched this time.

Atom-smashing is the more practical option, though certainly it's more dwarfy to use magma.

You missed the point. 30~40 was for Lytha's specific situation of having 2000+ happiness points with 19 dwarves piling up on the quantum party tile. Your situation was very different - I'd estimate you had maybe 400~600 happiness points on your dwarves given what you gave them.

Let me put it another way: if you consider danger room training as an exploit, then so too is 1x1 meeting zone quantum socialising. Like danger rooms, there are drawbacks from relying on it (i.e. you can't have babies or pets in the danger room) which I've outlined in my previous post. But it gets you what you want (happiness points) far better than the conventional way to do it. 2000+ happiness points was for 19 dwarves. Quantum party with 200 dwarves and the points will rack up even more.

I use a similar setup to crossmr, but since my entire fortress is built around a central 3x3 staircase, I build a 20 x 20 dining room on one side of the staircase, and another for food supplies on the other.

Nobles get a 11x11 room (It's just easier to designate) on the next most valuable Z level With two 4x2 rooms included in, separated by natural walls for an office and a dining hall.

I engrave everything in my fortress, even the caverns. It's just looks so much cleaner and neater when everything is smooth and free of all those annoying images on the walls.

I've been thinking of making a true dwarven fort for a while now.  A Massive dining room with magma mist generators (Who cares if half my fortress dies, it''s freaking magma), powered by dwarf labor, and for bedrooms, I'll make a 20x20 room and fill it with beds, designating each one as a bedroom, and forcing my dwarves to eat wild strawberries and stagnant, contaminant-filled water contained in dwarf-made reservoirs, which I top up with the blood of my enemies, nobles, and whoever doesn't have a beard of a least 6 feet long that can beat Armok to death in a single blow.

Am i only one who did 11x11 rooms for everyone?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
...that interestingly shaped room in middle is my dining room and it has my most important lever in middle of it.

Of course I don't always do this kind of rooms for everyone, if I want rooms fast I quickly designate many 11x wide lines and cut them to half (causing two 5x lines) and then build corridor in middle of them creating lots of 2x "rooms" where I can stuff bed and door, or if I'm short of wood just bed.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

-edit-

By the way, there is 107 beds currently in my 11x11 bedroom fortress, and it spans 5 z-levels.

It's always easier to do things as effectively as possible. You don't really need rooms or a very big meeting area. But I like making them anyway. I like to look at my fort and think: If I was a dwarf, I'd want to live here. At least aspire in that general direction.

I try to make 2x2 or 3x3 rooms for everyone, most of the time. It's not top priority but sooner or later I'll get on it.
