Make sure you have enough picks.
Also 'abandon fortress' doesn't delete the save file, it just ends the game for that fortress. In the future, you can reclaim the fortress ([R] on embark selection screen) to retry.

Dont go messing around with Reclaiming just yet. When you do, the embark will be a-clutter with items from your first embark. Which will all be Forbidden, so you'll wonder how to pick it up. And once you figure that out, you'll be mystified about why your jobs aren't being carried out.

Not to mention the fog of war in the fortress that you reclaim, which can be annoying to rediscover if there's no items of use in the fog/no military dwarves yet.

What's stopping a person from embarking, leaving say, the anvil there, and then abandonning and then re-embarking with other useful goods, and the anvils still there? What's stopping us from repeating that 20 times to get all sorts of items we want? lol

I once did thisunintentionally. I embarked on a volcano, and as it turned out all of my guys started on one of those instant-cave-in-on-embark ledges right next to the volcano. I abandoned before any of them could drown, and when I reclaimed it was like a normal fort with an extra wagon (with no food in it).

Absolutely nothing. In fact, that's the hard way of doing it - the easy way is to go to the worldgen options and just increase the embark points so you can bring anything you want on first try.

To the OP, make sure you are building kitchens, stills and butcher shops to process any food and plants you've got.  That will all automatically go into barrels and stored in a food stockpile for you.

it looks like most of your basic questions have been answered.  The traditional repayment routine is to let the rest of us know the many spectacular ways your first few forts will fail.  It amuses and inspires us and keeps us coming back to help new noobs so we can see new and interesting !!FUN!!.

So keep us up to date!  I'm personally putting my money on booze-shortage that makes work slow down until not even new booze can be made and everyone collapses into melancholy.

That's the way it usually work.  Noob asks questions.  Seasoned dwarfineers answer in some variety of fashion.  Slightly-less-noob applies knowledge, and returns with tales of failed megaconstructions and alligators swimming through the plumbing and invading the dining hall.  Everyone shares a good laugh.

I bet on first gobbo ambush wiping half of (completely unprepared) fortress.

Yeah, I'm currently trying to catch up on my food/booze production, get it running. It became urgent when 8 migrants showed up just as I was getting the first set of bedrooms done...

Also, I unfortunately have TWO entrances two my fortress, and no gates. Sigh.

Now if I can just figure out why they aren't picking up all this mined jet and move it to the designated gem stockpile. Eight or nine idlers and no one feels like hauling some rock to be useful? What gives?

My money is on booze or food shortage during the winter. We'll see.

Jet is not a gem in DF. It's just a magma-unsafe rock.

Yes, I have since figured out that jet is a stone and not a gem.

Progress update: Some more migrants arrived. Meh. More mouths to feed when I still feel like I'm staggering from one task to the next!

Right (as in seconds) before winter starts, a liason and a caravan arrive. I didn't have a trade depot ready so I built one, but so far they haven't moved to it. I guess I'd better build a road for the future.

The liason/diplomat is in my broker/bookeeper/expedition leader's office/study. So is the b/b/expedition leader. Liason says he wants to talk about the situation. I hit enter.... and then I'm back to running my fortress. The wiki says I have to get my guy to do the "Conduct Meeting" job, yet I can't find it in the menu. Suggestions?

Oh! I successfully butchered a yak and seem to have a farm somewhat running, and the still is producing (albeit at a low capacity). A young yak calf followed the tame yak into the butcher shop and watched its mother get slaughtered. It now won't leave the room. That was....unexpected and depressing. Oh well! If he grows up in there I guess it won't take long to find another yak....

Conduct meeting is automatic. The shortcut way to get it over with quickly is, when the first "OH HAI blah blah blah blah blah" screen shows up pause the game and [ d ] esignate, [ x ] cancel designation on a bunch of empty tiles anywhere. it will cause the meeting to progress even though the game is paused and you can take care of it instantly, without having a screen pop up 5 or 6 times while you're trying to handle the ambushes that showed up with the caravan.

I know it sounds odd now, but don't fret, eventually you'll be desperate for those early migrants. Seriously :) Once you figure out an industry you'll never un-learn it, then it's just a matter of picking what's best for your embark.

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

Roads have no effect on trading. It could be that not having the depot ready when the caravan arrived screwed things up. The next time one shows up, you should be OK. If you want to clean up all that rock thats probably lying around and have something to trade, you can build a craftsdwarf workshop and put someone with stonecrafting enabled to work churning out (to use the TVTropes term) Vendor Trash like mugs, instruments and toys.

Hah. Why bother with that when you can just set the embark points in advanced worldgen to 1 billion if you like. Reclaiming 20 times just for extra stuff only says you don't know enough about cheating.

Multiple reclaims are for when your guys keep getting eaten by something nasty. The most I ever had was 68 coffins filled by the time the site was secure.

BTW: Isn't there a cheat where you can claim the stuff straight out of the caravan?

Try keys "d-b-c" then designate a rectangle over the caravan.

It's not really a cheat because they still blame you for stealing it

Your young yak is likely starving now...it needs grass to survive. Either designate and assign a pasture outside (however yaks consume metric buttloads of grass) or butcher it as well.
