Indeed. Go to the graphics pack on the Newb GUI.

If you're mining, make sure the designated spot comes out ALL THE WAY to the cliff side.

Some embarks can't bring axes or picks, due to lack of materials in the rest of the generated dwarven empire or some other reason.

If you're using the Newb pack, use one of their embarks. Always gets you the right stuff.

A possibility: The embark profile you used had copper axes and picks specified, but your parent civilization had a distinct lack of copper and therefore couldn't equip you with a copper anything. Always ensure that your embark profile has anvil, axe, pick, food and booze - and if you learned the basics you can take a look for more advanced embark configurations, the wiki is your friend.

Since you're new, I'd like to remind you that you will become more sociopathic as you play. You should know this from reading tv-tropes tho...
What? What makes you think that?

The easy way to check if you have a miner would be to use Dwarf Therapist. That might even be included in the Lazy Newb pack, but I don't know. Start the Therapist while your fortress is running, and check if someone has the mining labour enabled. Then go back to DF and check if you have a pick. Press "z", tab to "Stocks", scroll to "weapons". If there's a pick or two, you're set. You should then be able to expand the view with  "x", and can select the pick and see if anyone is wielding it.

Now, for your mining designation. Could you describe to us in a few short words how your embark scenario looks like? Help depends a bit on the scenario - if you are sitting on a completely flat map, you need to channel out a tile, then move one z-level lower (with one of the < and > keys), and there you can dig merrily.

If you are sitting on a hill, you can comfortably dig into it without having to worry about this 3 dimensionality of the game just yet.

A screenshot (suitably sized or thumbnailed) or few would be the best way to describe the situation.

Progress update:

Well, the mining continues. It stopped for a while, but then I deleted the "burrow" I'd established and it resumed. After some playing around and reading and one false start, I even set up several stockpiles! Food, stone, wood, cloth, finished goods (from the disassembled wagons) are all being amassed in designated areas.

That's good.

The frustrating part? My dwarves are falling asleep.... and I don't have any beds. I've tried to get them to make beds. I've had them chop down trees, salvage the wagon, and haul all of it to one place.... and I've set in the manager for them to make 7 beds, first priority. Nothing.

Also, any idea how I can tell them to pick up that anvil they left outside and, uh, bring it INSIDE?

OK, I have to reload the save.
There was a bit of a problem regarding flashfreezing, a ballistae, and a barrel of dwarven ale. Gonna fix it up.

They need a carpentry workshop and carpentry enabled to make beds.  A furniture stockpile is required for beds, anvils, tables, barrels, buckets, etc to be stored.

Also, in case you haven't found it yet, Dwarf Therapist (and several other useful tools) can be found in the Lazy Newb GUI under Utilities.

After I made that last post, I figured out how to construct a carpenter's workshop and enable carpentry on the dwarves. Beds are currently in progress... after that, perhaps I'll figure out how to put things IN barrels.

And doors. Those should be made.

And trying to figure out what I do with a second expedition leader. And how to make sure that the first one gets the best (in this case, a well made birchen) bed. Rank hath its privileges, after all.

You have to build the beds with b-b, as a loose bed will be stored but not slept it.  They can be built anywhere that has a roof over it.  Once that's done, you can leave it there as normal, and anyone sleepy will take it, or you can make a room of it, and the first person to sleep in it will claim it as their personal bedroom, which forbids others from sleeping there.  You can also manually assign the bedroom, so that your leader (or your starting 7, as most prefer) can have a special bedroom.

At the beginning, I'd advise you to make a dormitory, which is a communal sleeping room so you dont need several rooms complete with doors and beds for every single dwarf. Dig a hole, put 3-4 beds into it and designate is as a dormitory. Similar to the dormitory, build a meeting hall with chairs and tables so your dwarves can eat and drink properly.

Dwarves will not leave the burrow you assign them to. If the job is in the burrow, they'll do it. If it isn't, they won't.
You can haul the anvil inside by designating a furniture stockpile with 'p' and something else. It'll show you a list of stuff. Press the furniture key. Keep in mind that if you have other furniture, they'll bring it there too. Or you could build a temporary metalsmith's forge where you want the anvil, and then destroy the forge after it's done.

They will leave a burrow to save their lives, like to eat or drink or flee from a hostile or flee from an errant groundhog.  But they'll sleep on the floor and dehydrate before they move.

Make sure you have enough picks.
Also 'abandon fortress' doesn't delete the save file, it just ends the game for that fortress. In the future, you can reclaim the fortress ([R] on embark selection screen) to retry.

Dont go messing around with Reclaiming just yet. When you do, the embark will be a-clutter with items from your first embark. Which will all be Forbidden, so you'll wonder how to pick it up. And once you figure that out, you'll be mystified about why your jobs aren't being carried out.

To op: get mining working: have 1 dwarf with the mining labor enabled. Make sure there is a pick in your cart. Use dig stairs down/ramp to carve a hole in the soil to get started. You can see on the z-level below where you carved the hole. Then designate a dig upstairs or begin designating mining in neighbor squares
