Apparently DD can't equip a Runed DWARVEN Battleaxe even though I removed my Shield and anything I had quivered. Is it to big or something?

I hope one day someone will be able to implement a cooperative gametype in Crawl, would be extremely fun to have a group adventuring in the dungeon and branches.

Congratulations on a fine win, Robsoie! Have you had offline wins previously?

I'm finding my demigod a bit challenging at the moment, I'm still some way from being ready for Zot. Whilst I've got haste, deflect missiles and silence, I'm feeling pretty fragile with a lack of resists (apart from MR) and not enough defence to stand toe to toe with the big hitters for very long (AC 18 EV 16 SH 30). I very much doubt I'll be able to fetch the orb by tomorrow, but I'll keep ploughing on at a comfortable pace, and perhaps snag a few more uniques and another rune.
Here's a recent character dump.

Thanks,

While i obtained runes lots of time offline, i never had a win in a legit way (i mean without save scumming or wizard mode), this online win is really my first fully legit one.

If it can be of any help, here are what helped my character to survive in Zot :

-Mystic Blast : during my game i have not found the book of annihilation anywhere, so i didn't had the crystal spear spell, and using Iron Shot is out of question as wasting lots of magic point in casting inaccurate spells equal losing a turn and precious Mp and equal getting in very dangerous situation.
But Mystic Blast with enough conjuration and spellcasting skill is doing some nice damage and helped killing everything in the game.

-Poison Clouds : the majority of Zot monsters are not poison immune, only the Liches, the Orbs of Fire or the poison kind of Draconians were poison immune, they're powerfull enemies so be sure to have something else to deal with them, but poison Cloud is a formidable weapon to use in Zot as long as you can keep casting it on your enemy to poison them more and more.
The very powerfull Orb Guardians are affected by Poison, and it's really needed when you're not having a great fighter (as my primary focus was on spell) as they close in to you quickly, so having them losing health each turn is needed.

-Call Imp or anything similar that will give you meat shields that can resist poison, this is very needed to keep the enemy inside of the poison clouds. Note that you may need a lot of them due to how strong the enemies are in Zot (an Orb Guardian will tear through them by example)

-Animate Dead , there are lots of dragons to kill in Zot, nothing beat having a zombie dragon as a meat shield and heavy hitter, and being poison immune, they're perfect to keep an enemy in the poison area

-Dispel Undead , once you have high necromancy skill, you will annihilate liches and ancient liches rather quickly in a few hits, the main difficulty will be then to meet them around corners, so they don't start to summon tons of monsters to overwhelm you, and having enough life in case they're casting offensive spells to you.

-Resistance to Fire at the maximum (a must against the Orb of Fire as they hit very strongly and from a distance or at close range, it will help in lowering their damage output a very lot) and a resist mutation amulet (always to deal with the Orb of Fire, you really don't need the avalanche of bad mutation those things will throw at you)

I didn't found any summon book, so it was difficult to deal with summoners (i had to run away to another floor) without the Abjuration spell, but it's certainly good to have

And my long time weapon : a dagger of distorsion, as i was not planning to get in close combat i could afford the thought of enemy banished not giving XP.

But when it banish or teleport an enemy away, it's a great weapon to come out of impossible fights.

During my run i had to fight Khufu that was forbidding me to get into Crypt.
It was a way too strong enemy, he was summoning like crazy (i couldn't abjurate as i never found the spell) , was smitting heavy damage (most of my time fighting him was in fact casting control teleport and teleport to save my character life) and is immune to nearly every spells.

After lots of tries to destroy him with everything i had (i had no fire spells that would have helped possibly), it was just impossible for my kind of character to destroy him.
So i thought of a completely different strategy : learning Silence (i spent some time killing monsters just to victory dance the Silence spell school) and making good use of the agility, might, speed and berzerk potion i had.

Noticing Khufu, i managed to attract his attention while i was hiding in a corner of Vault.
I drank most of the potions, he appeared and i used the Silence spell, then drank my last potion and attacked him while berzerk.
Despite all i noticed i was losing health quicker than him (Khufu has very lot of health, that's certainly why), so in the end it was going to be a lost battle.
But that's where you're happy to have a distorsion brand, because it decided to activate and banish Khufu forever.

I dared go to Zot only when i reached level 25, i would not dare to go there anytime before (when i think eliptic last year tournament won the game with a character at level 14 i just can't imagine how it is possible).

And very important in Zot:5, don't hesitate to run away to the upstair floors to rest, resting in Zot:5 can be extremely dangerous.

@Robsoie

Congrats on your 1st win!  :D

And to ggeezz as well. Your clan is now comfortably in the Top 20.

I just realized that games on CDO count on CAO, so losing my Centaur Berserker on Zot:5 ended my 3-game streak from the previous tournament.  :'(

@baruk

Your character looks capable of getting the silver and abyssal runes. And you can probably transition into a mage quite smoothly, if you wanted. I suggest turning off axes and turning on spellcasting if you go that route. I see that your air magic skill is pretty high. Are you trying to get Tornado?

Thanks, i'm very far from being as good as you though :D

I can only dream of fetching 15 runes like you did, my few offline adventures in Hell and Pandemonium convinced me that it was definitively not place i should go without having a death wish.

Oh and i was wrong, it was not elliptic that made the level 14 rune fetching , but jaeger and qwqw :

Whats with SpEn? They're way to soft and nimble for me. If anything, they can only train up stealth and run to the orb, which doesn't sound very effective.

qwqw is elliptic's speed-runner account iirc. The top players seem to use many alt accounts.

SpEn has extreme speed and the ability to instant-kill monsters it has no business messing with.

To explain how it works:

Roll a SpEn, learned a bunch of low level utility spells (along with haste and invisibility). Worship Jiyva for a free rune, steal the other 2 runes, and dive down the dungeon, while avoiding most monsters. Invisibility and your speed allows you to pick and choose your battles, because most dungeon monsters don't have see invisible.

For Zot, just dive down to Zot:5, teleport randomly, and ninja the Orb. It comes down to a lot of experience and luck. I'm not very fast, as my fastest win was with a level 18 SpVM in 8 hours.  :P I guess you'd have to stab the guardians now, since they nerfed Apportation (and the Orb screams when touched).

I'm planning to switch off axes at 16 (the speed cap for broad axe). I raised air skill to get deflect missiles to excellent - I don't have the tornado book yet, but I do have lightning bolt available (and summon elemental).
My overall thinking was a crusader-style charms and combat approach. Perhaps going a bit more magey is a better bet.
Here's a list of the books I've got so far:

If you go the mage route and can't find Tornado, then Refrigeration would be a good choice. It'll allow you wipe out the guards on Vault:8 and the Orb chamber in Zot in a few turns. Though, it'll destroy your potions. Other good spells:

Airstrike - Decent attack spell with smite-targeting.
Insulation - Fighting electric golems, black draconians, and storm dragons without rElec is very painful.
Intoxication (if you have clarity) - Useful against draconians, orb guardians, and many others.

I just noticed that my ghosts are in 3rd place for most ghost kills.  Makes sense since I make so many of them!

I seem to have found a spellbook that's not on the wiki. O_o
It's "The Guide on Dusty Bewitchment", containing Confusing Touch, Maxwell's Silver Hammer, Sure Blade, Petrify, Control Undead, and Statue Form.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.
