Yeah, I had all the gear, and I was very close to the elf rune too, I might have actually totally cleared the room it was in but I didn't want to poke my head in there after expending all my resources fighting off the annihilators and blademasters so I decided to go down a level or two in the dungeon and got caught by a shaft.  I'll try and keep the competition up with the other bay12 teams.

There is no rune to be found in Elven Halls, though it's strange considering how strong the last vault defense is, there's only items in the elven vaults.

Never ever consider a fight is won.
Ijyb is usually the weakest unique, with a fighter class you sometime can kill him without items help in close combat at level 2 or 3.

... usually ...
Because Crawl randomness can transform him into a destruction machine.

Demonspawn with a fail of protection +3, he's at level 7 encounter Ijyb.
Ijyb wield a wand of electrocution, Ijyb shoots.
Electrocution hits, and hits again.
Demonspawn very surprised to see how quickly his health is going down retreat to a corner, Ijyb shoot again, Demonspawn dead at 1 tile of safety.

Ijyb with a decent wand is pretty much death incarnate for most characters early on, especially if you're melee-based.

That's an awesome unintentional pun, it really did fail at protecting you there!

Thanks to a Ring of Robustness and a +5 ring of Evasion, I have 16 ac, 23 ev, and 15 sh on D:7.  Not bad for a halfing conjuror.

47 HP could be better, though, and I'd kill for another spellbook- just have the starter one.

15/29/28 stats now that I'm quad-Pondered with Chei.  I have a serious lack of rPois, which makes me scared of going too deep in the Lair.  Swamp and Hive are out.  I stuck my head in Orc, and saw two ogres, 20 (!) regular orcs, some warriors and priests, and Sonja.  I'm going to put up my ice armor, quaff a potion of slow, and fire off Slouch- let's see what happens.

31 kills in only a turn, that's impressive.

What is the cost of Slouch ?
As i never used Chei to the point i can cast it, i have no idea as neither the bot or the wiki are mentionning its cost.

5 MP and "moderate" food and piety.  Damage is based on speed difference, so it annihilates the really fast nasties, while slow ones aren't hurt too much.  This is actually my best Chei caster so far and the first time I've used it.  One-shotting Sonja is fun.  The +10 to every stat is just part of the fun!

Ah thanks, it looks very usefull.
Now the main problem is getting a character with Chei to survive long enough to be able to use Slouch.

I like Chei with casters.  Attack/cast speed is the same, so hang back and let them come to you.  Once you get about three supports of pondered items, that stat boost really starts to shine- especially with int.

On the other hand, I hit Orc 4, saw Rupert, who came up to me, paralyzed me, went berserk, and kicked my ass seven ways from Sunday.  Oh well.

Each time i had a berzerker becoming slow after the power ran out with always enemies around, he was just a dead character considering how an easy target that can barely fight back such character become.

So i'm wondering, with how slow a character become when equipped with Chei pondered items, are there any tricks to get a non-caster viable with Chei ?

My updated list of woe:

Quote
D:14 Nikola!
Elf:1 iron troll!
Elf:4 Norris!
Lair:6 orange rat pack!
Lair:8 acid blob!
Swamp:2 Aizul!
Swamp:3 Maud!
Snake:4 Saint Roka!

I think today is N-day. I've got as far as I can in Swamp/Snake/Elf. A major problem is that I can't take on anacondas or alligators without curare needles, and I only have two left. If I can take out Nikola, that gives me a large chunk of extra dungeon to work with. I have one potion of resistance, and a sword of rElec that I can buy as back-up (but I'd rather be hitting him with the anti-magic war axe). In my favour I just got haste and deflect missiles to "good" success rate, and I found the rod of destruction (ice) on Elf: 3 - the one that has freezing cloud.

The problem with using the anti-magic axe is that you must first get close to Nikola, meaning that gives him to to cast his destructive electric spells to your character.
And those would do their full damage.

Then 2nd problem, weapon brands unfortunately works randomly, on 1 hit sometime the brand activates and does its work, sometime the brand does nothing and you're hitting like if it was a normal weapon, if unlucky you may hit him without activating the brand and so get shot multiple time.
And there's the high possibility that Nikola has a weapon with an electrocution brand.

I think you should really use some electric resistance/insulation from that weapon or never try to fight Nikola, as it will reduce the damage of his spells a lot, but you need to have good skills with it to be able to hit Nikola reliably and does enough damage (as he has 190 health !)

Now freezing clouds can be a great help, Nikola does not have cold resistance listed.

And do not try to use a wand of confuse/paralyse unless you have high evocation, as Nikola has a lots of magic resistance, meaning he would resist those wands easily, making you lose a turn and take a lightning shot in answer.
