Melee ghost are really really hard. Or so I found.  Magic ghost all you really need to do is get in a thin hallway and quaff a potion of might (Because I ALWAYS end up having one)

How precisely did my clan manage to LOSE points? We had over 200 (I believe it was ~266 or something) and were trailing 10 spots behind one of the other Bay12 clans, and now we're at 189, back at 41st place.

There are 2 kind of points, the permanent ones (kill uniques, kill ghosts, get runes, win ...) that you will not lose and the temporary ones with the combo scores that you can actually lose.

When you play with a specific combo, by example "halfling wanderer" and reach a score none else on the whole tournament reached, you are awarded temporary points for getting the best score on the "halfling wanderer" combo.
But as soon as someone from another team make a better score in "halfling wanderer", you lose the temporary points that were awarded to your team , and those temporary points will go to the team that has the new highest score for "halfling wanderer".

Team 2 actually managed to pass us for awhile. Fortunately, I took care of it. Now, we're ahead again.  8)

Oh, and I love being able to cast Shatter by the mid-game.  :D

Really this game loves rushing as many ghosts at me as it can if I'm playing some scrub weak caster who cant deal with them. But no if I'm playing a monstrous berserker it doesn't want to do that.

I made some progress with my Demigod:
Quote
90452 | Orc:1    | Noticed Sonja
 90594 | Orc:1    | Defeated Sonja
 90660 | Orc:1    | Found Xish's Magical Wand Emporium.
 90675 | Orc:1    | Bought a wand of teleportation (10) for 357 gold pieces
 93645 | Lair:5   | Reached skill level 5 in Evocations
 94840 | Snake:2  | Reached skill level 5 in Spellcasting
100681 | Snake:4  | Identified a +0 rod of destruction [inacc,magma,cold] (11/11) (You found it on level 4 of the Snake Pit)
101427 | Snake:4  | Reached XP level 15. HP: 109/116 MP: 9/28
102483 | Snake:4  | Noticed Saint Roka
102958 | Swamp:1  | Defeated Nessos
104204 | Swamp:1  | Noticed Louise
104518 | Swamp:1  | Defeated Louise

In short, my breakthrough came when I read a scroll of magic mapping on Orc:1, which uncovered a couple of inaccessible areas. I dug my way to them using a stone of earth elementals - killing Sonja netted me a +3 blowgun and 4 curare needles (my first of the game), and the wand of teleportation I bought is a handy insurance policy. This gave me the edge I needed to take out the anacondas in Snake.
I used evocable invisibility from my robe of Night to get the edge on Nessos and Louise - they're not so clever after they've been hit with an anti-magic war axe. I still have Snorg to deal with on Swamp: 1, don't think I can beat him in melee, confuse might be my best option.

Great, was hoping someone would get a win. If ggeez can win with his SpEn, it will make things close again.

Crawl lesson of the day

When you find an artifact that let your character go berzerk, and want to avoid using some items/divine magic to spare them for more dangerous situations later, your character will fail at activating the berzerk ability 6 times in a row, leading to your character death.
While it obviously worked in the 1st try when facing less powerfull monsters.

Couldn't believe it when my Orc priest faced this insane streak of bad luck regarding the rage activation.

This tournament is so much fun. It's really allowed me to hone my skills with a lot of combos of characters I don't normally play.

I hope the "official" tournament in the summer will attract more Bay12 members, with WebTiles that works very well even with a portable Iron browser (and will continue to be improved as the developer seems to always work on it from what i read on the Crawl Tavern) it may remove one of the main barrier with online play, the ASCII only.

I find it more fun to play for getting more team points that only alone in your corner with only your own score as a reward.

Well, the coolest thing about team points is how you can gain them for doing a lot of different things that usually make you feel good inside when you do even in singleplayer.

But honestly I hardly ever play crawl offline. Even when there's not a tournament, it's still fun to look at people's scores, play the trunk versions so easily, watch games, etc...

I went from 24 combo high scores to 10.  That's 48 points gone right there.

Once the game I'm partway through finishes, I'll have one back, then I'll go from there.

HMR stands for Hazardous Materials Requisition, not Horrible Massive Ruination, though I can understand how one could get confused.
God help us if we have to agree on pizza toppings at some point. There will be no survivors.

So close to the orb!  I've never gotten that close.  I fell down a shaft an extra three levels before I was ready though.

At least you got 3 runes online, that's already a great achievement.
A pity this shaft got you, it's always very difficult when you fall several floors down and see monsters you can't fight on equal basis.
