Lets Fail: Utterly Newbie First Take at Aurora LP
« on: May 12, 2011, 01:32:32 pm »

so, a brief introduction: Aurora is a unbelievably complex 4x space game, strongly geared toward micromanaging of everything of your own empire, from turret gears to jumpgate networks, from civilian traders to crew careers and promotions in each and every ship in the universe.

you can get more information from the Magnus' thread at http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=47678.0

Now, I've finally got some time on hands to read the tutorials a bit and watching the screens and fighting the interface, and I'd like to share the failfun of my first take in the universe.

I know just enough to design ships and to know what a preTN start is (you start with zero research and everything and beyond has to be done)

with that knowledge in hand, I'm off to guide the Terran Federation to a golden age of space exploration and prosperity.

here it is, the universe in all it's parametrized glory:

and the good ol solar system:

A new era of exploration has begun for the Terran Federation.

Since the first contact, we dreamed of returning to the star, not let down from the failures of the early 21th century technology.

With the prime material for research right here, with this very first alien artifact that come to us from the star, we're at just one step from truly owning the sky for the first time-

The reverse engineering of the artifact one technology will greatly fuel our own research. But there are other issues to tackle right now.

We're not sure on how this ship managed to get here nor from where it came out. Until then, we've to be prepared for any scenario should arise, as we're not alone out there. Right now, a missile Installation orbits toe to toe with the new research shipyard, and should provide us with protection from the rightful owner of the technology we're stealing, if he will ever want to take it back from us.

The research will require at least 10 months to be completed, in the meanwhile, all the government of the world reunited under the Federation flag are to expand and extend their production capability in the expectation of the colonization of the solar system in the years to come.

In the meanwhile, the maiden ship is being designed, and its engine developed in other labs.

The current priority is to expand and empower our research network, as the future will surely bring us new challenges and possibilities.

our proud teams working at their projects:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

we also need to figure out how to build research labs. scientist are confused on how their labs got there in the first place.

Question: How much information do you want from the readership?

I could answer your question regarding the research labs, but would that spoil your fun?
[It probably wouldn't, as you'll find out in a few turns anyways, but still]

minor note: I had to restart because of a bad installation. I've done the same stuff, but the universe is slightly different.

I accept any suggestion, of course. It may also spark some polls and stuff.

I'll look up most of the stuff on the wiki as we boldly go where nobody went before, so probably it would be better to have the full fun of discovering minor errors/nuisance/strategy in the bad way (aka getting slaughtered), but if anyone see me do something utterly stupid that may result in just loosing out of stupidity you're welcome to fix things up :P

A month passed. eager with anticipation, the Moon and Mars have been declared available for colonization.

It seems the shipyard is ill suited for our moon colonization effort, and its capacity is going to be expanded to accommodate future manned transports ships.

Meanwhile, enter the Prometeo!

Code: [Select]
Prometeo class Colony Ship    4,600 tons     148 Crew     174.6 BP      TCS 92  TH 2  EM 0
21 km/s     Armour 1-24     Shields 0-0     Sensors 1/1/0/0     Damage Control Rating 1     PPV 0
Maint Capacity 24 MSP    Max Repair 5 MSP
Passengers 250

Conventional Engine E1 (1)    Power 2.5    Fuel Use 10%    Signature 2.5    Armour 0    Exp 1%
Fuel Capacity 50,000 Litres    Range 189.0 billion km   (104166 days at full power)

This design is classed as a Commercial Vessel for maintenance purposes

The prometeo is the first of his kind, build from the ground up to colonize space with style and efficiency. It's about four time larger than our current shipyard, but I'm confident about our engineers capacity of extending the current station beyond it's original limits.

The space race has begun!

Mars! The moon is a boring lump of dust, while Mars is an exciting lump of red dust!

We have finally decoded the secrets of the mysterious ships that had fallen on us as a gift by the gods.

Our scientist are overwhelmed by new ideas and concepts, a sparkle of pure creativity is running in their soul. There is so much to do!

We're set on building a Mars colony. After centuries of dreams, Moon had to be discarded from our expansion plans. Our failure to cope with gravity won't stop the planned mining operations on the Moon, but that plan are to be revised at a later date.

The shipyard upgrades are lagging behind. A future research on miniaturization technology may be required to avoid this kind of delay. In the meanwhile, we're using our spare production capacity on earth to build the infrastructure for our first colony!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
And next up are research stations. The factory is also to be shipped to mars.

To manage shipping and colonization, I've requested the help of some earth corporations, putting up a contract for delivery the infrastructure out to there. The Hutchinson Transport Corporation had shown some interest, but they need some idea and design to start off with their plans. I hope the private sector can fill the gap of our production.

This is our first proposal for a cargo ship. It's still off scale and presented as a theoretical model, as it's 12 times more than what our shipyard can build.
Code: [Select]
Loki class Cargo Ship    29,850 tons     98 Crew     190.8 BP      TCS 597  TH 5  EM 0
8 km/s     Armour 1-85     Shields 0-0     Sensors 1/1/0/0     Damage Control Rating 1     PPV 0
Maint Capacity 4 MSP    Max Repair 5 MSP
Cargo 25000

Conventional Engine E1 (2)    Power 2.5    Fuel Use 10%    Signature 2.5    Armour 0    Exp 1%
Fuel Capacity 50,000 Litres    Range 28.8 billion km   (41666 days at full power)

This design is classed as a Commercial Vessel for maintenance purposes

two years. two years passed and we're still confined on this rocks.

passed the initial excitement, we're now fighting with sub-par production capacity. There is so much to do. But first, I'm going to research some way of having research happen faster than this.

We have the entire space to explore and we're still stuck with producing the infrastructure for our first Mars colony.

I think I need to get the people more motivated about space faring. A good gold rush it's what I need right now, to promote the expansion in the solar system. With some manmindpower diverted from the research researching researched by researcher, I've managed to obtain a scanner that's able to find and report the quantity of the so precious trans-Newtonian elements we've just discovered.

Now that the shipyard is at almost 4k in capacity, we're able to build our first small geological survey ship out in the solar system.
The first of the line is getting out right now, the Cuba 001 of Cuba class:

Code: [Select]
Cuba class Geosurvey Ship 3500 tons     98 Crew     175.6 BP      TCS 70  TH 5  EM 0
71 km/s     Armour 1-20     Shields 0-0     Sensors 1/1/0/1     Damage Control 1     PPV 0
Maintenance Capacity 31 MSP

Conventional Engine E1 (2)    Power 2.5    Fuel Use 10%    Armour 0    Exp 1%
Fuel Capacity 50,000 Litres    Range 255.6 billion km   (41666 days at full power)

Geological Survey Sensors (1)   1 Survey Points

This ship is classed as a commercial vessel for maintenance purposes

I hope we'll see more activity in the near future; as it's now, well'need a couple of year just to build the research centers I've tasked, and the current estimate to double our production capacity is that we'll have to wait for more than a decade.

It seems right now that the limiting factor in production is mineral scarcity, so colonies may be the only way to get out of the current resource stall.

A small geological team is also on the ready, waiting for space transportation to become viable in the near future. I wonder if I can safely land them on moon to do their work, even if there is no atmos there...

Yes, spacesuits do exist in Aurora.  Your team will be fine.

Oh, and as for the slow start: The best way to trudge through the beginning as a conventional start is to set several long-term projects (building and research), then use the 30 day auto-turn.

Those ships are really slow you will be waiting ages to get anything done.

Sure but the shipyard is anemic, I'm expanding that as fast as I can but I've to spend resources carefully as earth seems short of duranium and crobinium.

I plan to have sooner or later a hundred or so automated mines + mass driver everywhere useful, or I won't even get a single ship out there before depletion.

Also, I'm still at the most babsic power engine.

Yeah, it's impossible to build anything but really slow ships with the conventional engines.  I'd suggest prioritizing Nuclear Engine Technology (you may need to research a Reactor technology first).  Your ships will go twenty times faster.
