Smallest PC evarrrr (ok, maybe not)
« on: May 12, 2011, 11:46:04 am »

Our dear David Braben, known for his work in the Elite and Frontier game series, has developed a really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really tiny PC called the "Raspberry Pi". And it costs only about $25 to make... uses Micro SD as storage and provides HDMI for video output and USB for peripherals such as mouse and keyboard... check it out.

More info at their website: http://www.raspberrypi.org/

You can also see them running Ubuntu 9 in it.

EDIT: A lil' related video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQ7N4rycsy4

Well, it's got an ARM11 processor, I have no idea what kind of machine code it expects, or if the Linux version has to be specifically compiled for it or not. Or if you can run WINE on a non-Intel compatible CPU. My guess is that it can't, since WINE Is Not an Emulator...

It would have to at least be recompiled, and have appropriate binaries for the dependencies available as well. Should be very possible though. Maybe someone should send a couple to Toady.

One thing about this computer that's a bit boring is that there's just one USB port. You'll either need an external USB hub or live with keyboard only. Also a bit unsure about how it does networking (or if it does at all).

My keyboard and mouse run off the same USB port, so it's possible to have both.

The device is mainly used to teach simple programming. While I'm not going to say it's impossible for it to run DF, it is impossible to run it at a frame rate over one per second, by my estimation. Then again, 700 megahertz and 128 megabytes of ram isn't completely useless. It's surprising how much you could actually do with it.

It could run Half-Life. That's all I need to know.

I guess we're never going to get Elite 4.
