On the Feasibility of Ruining the Circus
« on: May 12, 2011, 10:00:29 am »

I was planning on whipping up a nice heaping spoonful od !!SCIENCE!! all over the hidden fun stuff, and figured I would ask around if this little project I'm whipping up is even physically possible.

The plan was basically to send a little surprise to the clowns below. In theory rather than being a passive victim unleashing FUN onto the world timidly, I want to take the party to the clowns in the form of a 30z tall spike of rock, cut free to fall another 30 z levels down into the magma sea. If I go through with this, could it theoretically break through the semi molten rock and smash its way into hell?

If it does work, would it then flood the circus with a cascade of magma, or is it impossible to spike through semi molten rock?

Just thought I would ask before going through with this laborious undertaking.

The rock would be "Absorbed" into the semi-molten rock. No mega cave-ins, sorry.

You could drop the rock down a candy tube, though.

While on the surface that seems a waste of good candy, I think sending a message to the clowns along the lines of "No, we are invading you." is worth a few less  shiny blue clothes. This would require a clomplete change in the dig location though..

Dropping metric tons of rock in hell through adamantine tubes. Mhhhhh.
Difficult, as most dwarven rituals, but doable.
I approve, and want pictures.  :D

Would a nice magma bath work?

Should you fail to comply, strict !!disciplinary actions!! will be taken. Also, we feel we should remind you that one of the "criminals" on your list is the chief medical dwarf. If he ends up too badly injured to do his job, you will be fired. Out of a magma cannon.

you want to send a dwarfen message? send dwarfs on fire down to them! with fallen barrels of BOOZE! make your fiery dwarfs of doom show those pussies of circus WHO RULES IN HELL.
or make an enormous adamantine corcscrew, and start digging to make a big big fall.

“Do something!” she whispered, trying to keep her sight on all of them at once.
Basileus clapped his hands once. The Forgotten took a step forward, attracted by the sound.
“There, I did something. I clapped. I like clapping,” he said. -The Investigator And The Case Of The Missing Brain.

It's like crossing an aqueduct... or is the aqueduct crossing simply a less awesome version of this?

That's what the adamantine spires are! Previous mach holy-fuck deliveries sent by dwarves to tell those clowns they won't take any shit.

What's wrong with using magma? That's almost always the easiest method.
I have issues channeling it properly to do that method. I end up flooding the fortress with magma.

Demons are immune to water and magma, but not both. Cast statues of them... made from them!

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

Okay, I'm doing the measurements now. Unfortunately if I keep the origional 30z tall spike of destruction loaded to the brim with dwarven rum and the corpses of my enemies, I can get at best a 5 story drop.

How far of a drop would I need to make sure the spike had enough force to make it all the way to hell?

Edit- Darkmere, does that mean I should instead designate the spike as a pond and fill it with water?

Actually... that sounds like a neat way to make a fortress inside the magma sea...

This is an obsidian statue, made in year 207. All craftdwarfship is of the highest quality. The item is an image of the death of twenty seven demons in the year 207. The demons are cowering. The dwarves are laughing.

If you have a big enough pool in the sea, yeah you could make a fortress in it by doing that. Just keep in mind that any tile labeled "Magma Flow" cannot be turned into obsidian.

What would happen if water touched it?

hell... what you need to do is bore out a MASSIVE hole with a thin venere between you and the magma... make the hole all the way to the surface, giving you a nice long drop >>

load the spike with magma and water

Peirce right into hell with this 500 ton of dwarvish petrifying agent

Hope like hell it seals it back up because no way are you killing them all unless the firing mechanism releases an ocean down on top of them as WELL as magma >>

Okay, so if I have to drive the spike through the candy mountain I can't make it on the current map actually. The pipe bends too much on the way down. I'm going to change maps and hope I can find one that has at least one pipe that is roughly straight down.

Anyone have any tips on finding a site along these lines?

it's all luck there mate... I assume that SOMETHING in the world gen maker effects how twisty they are... but is there no way to straighten them out?

I've always been more focused on getting an above ground city WORKING and fit for a king before I begin hunting adamantium, so I've yet to get there (what with classes and such :P)

so is it magma RIGHT OUTSIDE the tube? or is there some wiggle room?
