Not so.  The act of observing HFS unleashes it.  DFReveal, if you unpause it while revealed, will release it without any digging.

That's true, but I've accidentally dug into it before through a hole in the magma sea, and while the demons spawned, none of them tried to get out. They didn't even spawn close enough to the hole to see the dwarf who opened it. When I turned off masonry on every dwarf but the miner responsible (reasoning that since he was standing on the tile, it would take little time to path to it) he got thirsty. So he wandered all the way up to the cafeteria, drank, walked all the way back down, and still sealed it off, no problem.

This is because HFS spawns under an addy vein, but not always the vein that you just dug through.  If it spawns under another vein, they sorta loiter for a while.

This is a giant phallus of fuck you. All craftdwarfship is of the highest quality. On the item is an image of a fearsome demon and a dwarf. The dwarf is raping the demon with a !!+Adamantine Battle Axe!!+ The demon is weeping. The Dwarf is laughing. The phallus is adorned with rings of magma and spikes of badger bone.

This is Dwarf Fortress. Where torture, enslavement, and murder are not only tolerable hobbies, but considered dwarfdatory.

Great, now the program is delayed yet another day while I engrave this thing. Thanks Mr.Happyface.

I have a map that can do this, but my computer is not working. Has anyone else successfully completed this?

How does this help accomplish the goal...?

How far of a drop would I need to make sure the spike had enough force to make it all the way to hell?

A 1 z level cave-in has as much force as 100, doesn't matter a whit.

So... all it takes to kill the initial demons is a one z-level cave in?
(EDIT: sorry if I misunderstood this)

As long as the ensuing cave-in hits them, yes.

Cave-ins generate lots of dust which can asphyxiate creatures, but not every demon has lungs. But if the slab of rock hits them... well, They'll probably get smashed.

What's wrong with using magma? That's almost always the easiest method.
I have issues channeling it properly to do that method. I end up flooding the fortress with magma.

But hitting them with 20 z-levels is more fun.
Also, build a small metal-lined "drop container" inside to protect your dwarves, and drop some speardwarves down there to finish off any that aren't instantly killed by the drop.

“Do something!” she whispered, trying to keep her sight on all of them at once.
