Theres Improved Batteries (Support) and Giant Laser (Offense) at 5.00 Physics. By researching flat physics, you have a pretty even chance of both, By researching Offensive physics you're gonna get the laser.  Is what I meant, if that clarifies it.

And yes, Guards and Techs are now available for straight hiring.

One thing about technology, is there a fixed tech-tree (like the Civ games)?
And everyone will eventually research the same thing, (Everyone will be able to research the laser.) or is it abit more.. flexible.

Edit, Also, for things like the captured plain clothing cop one of us captured, is there a prison type building we can research or steal the plans for or something? I have wealthy heiresses I want to hold for ransom.

In the early stages, its more fixed. Later on the tech tree branches out a significant amount.
Bodyguards.. Its something I've thought about, but have yet to place into the game in any capacity. It is assumed your minions will fight to the death to protect you while you escape however. And escape is incredibly likely.

And the trait selection would not impact this week. But Cult of Personality is upgradeable. And at level 2 gives a total of +7 minion cap.

We called over one of the Scientists there as well as this fellow who used to work the Security Desk in one of the buildings, but was caught stealing something and was fired. He turned out to be a Thug. After that we boosted our numbers with some Regular Workers, but soon they will be trained into something useful...

Lord Thrakor's weekly speech to his followers this week was brief.  Recent events have shown that at this point it was key for more followers of the most loyal to be recruited.  The coming week would be spent organizing those.
