Lock Game speed option
« on: May 12, 2011, 12:34:55 am »

Option to slow the game down or lock it to run at a maximum rate.

In Adventure mode
The Current SDL version runs so fast i cannot see thrown objects, blood splatter, knockback animations and the like.
They just appear BAM! as its running those things to quickly to see them.

Example can be found here http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=84463.0

For some reason it seems the current SDL version does not even try to draw things spreading/moving/thrown between tiles
If this was intended please bring back animations!

Thank you so much for this great game :)

I wish it worked like that, but it does not help setting FPS cap lower/higher

Just tried changing FPS cap to 1

Everything moved very slowly, including myself, input ect...

But if i throw something... it just BAM! appears wherever it fell, its like its not really drawing it moving through each tile :(

Only fix i have figured so far is using the current legacy version and setting G_FPS to 1000

In adventure mode?  I've always seen this happen with thrown objects.  You hit throw, and then you see it on the ground (or in someone).  The same can be said for all of adventure mode.  You never see a dodge, or an enemy approaching, or anything move.  You just have a series of snapshots that occur once every few frames depending on your speed and agility.

Ok but if you download the legacy version, set your G_FPS to 1000 (or use the 40d version), you will actually see objects depict a lvl of animation.
I noticed it watching an Adventure mode lets play, he was using the 40d version, and it showed objects moving between tiles, including blood splatter (actually splattering) rocks being thrown, arrows spears ect...

I am thinking the legacy version is working as it was intended and the current SDL either took shortcuts to improve performance or isnt working properly... animations are supposed to be there.

Try it with the legacy and G_FPS 1000 then throw something

Animations have been gone since after 40d, if you downlaod an older version you will see objects thrown ect.. actually travel between A........and......B

You have two different threads about this in the General DF Forum, as well as this one in the Suggestions Forum.  Plus, what you're looking for isn't even a matter of locking game speed, it's about SDL mode not supporting "animations" right now, which is something that Baughn will work on whenever Baughn starts working on it again.

You really shouldn't go starting a suggestion thread without knowing what it is you are trying to fix.

If you were to pay attention and note time stamps you would have a better picture of how this evolved.
I merely after realizing the issue i was having was not on my end, set about trying to link the posts up as best i could, i am not able to delete my own posts.

You can lock them, however.

And I was mistaken, you actually had 3 in the General Discussion and 1 in the Modding Forum, as well as this one.

All of this was related to a single topic, and as such, should have remained within a single thread.  There wasn't reason to spam the forums with different threads every time you learned about some new facet of the way the game works.  Keeping all the information related to a single discussion in a single place is the entire purpose of threads.

It shouldn't have to be on everyone else to have to search the forums for every post you made in the past few hours, open up multiple tabs to compare timestamps, and figure out what random eclectic path you followed.  If you just used threads like you are supposed to, that would be a simple task conducted by the positioning of the posts in the thread, themselves.

I'm pretty sure I've occasionally seen intermediate drawings of thrown objects in 40d. I think...
