Strip mining and cave-ins.
« on: April 08, 2008, 06:31:00 pm »

So I decided to play around, and strip mine a 2*2 area.  Took several dozen reclaims being a brutal dictator, but I did it.  I had several problems.  Digging under murky pools, by using the 'upward ramp' method, tended to cause cave-ins, that more often than not, would kill the dwarves, and thus leading to re-claims.  Whenever I reclaimed the plot, water would magically be created high up in the sky, above the murky pools, at z=0, even though the ground tile for the murky pool was at z=-6 or so.

Also, I noticed during one reclaim, that a floor was build for the wagon and an area around it.  There was a fairly significant drop of around 3 or 4 z levels below this floor in some spots, which were not filled with rock.

Digging my pit was getting tiring, so I decided to cause a huge cave-in.  I did it in a way such that I used concentric rings of ramps, largest at the top, and smaller down, and I dug out the bottom layer.  The ground on top was unevenly mined as well.  When the cave-in happened, many ramps got stuck in the air.  During the cave-in as well, I got about a page of 'we have discovered gold', etc, etc.  Looking at my bottom layer, I could see identified, utterly inaccessible stone, where my ramps were previously.

So yeah, just some things that seemed strange.

Okay, I'll stick the new bugs in the bug reports and note down some of the other issues.

It is gradually dawning on me that you mean a 2*2 map units area, not a 2*2 square area...that is to say, not space for 4 dwarves, but the smallest starting size for a map. That changes things!
