Though from what I can see the recommended items for Mal suggests that they want him to slow the opponents down.

Malz is my favorite mage, and I think he is a pretty darn good 1 vs 1 fighter and also great in teamfights.

I start with Meki Pendant + 2 HP potions, and later on buy CDR boots and Tear of the Goddess. Don't upgrade the Tear into Archangel staff until late game.

Once you have those two, get Rylai. Start with Giant's belt, since it makes you a lot beefier.
Then get Abyssal Scepter, starting from Negatron Cloak. Malzahar's base Magic Resist is 30, and it doesn't rise up. So Abyssal Scepter will be really useful.

Now you can buy Will of the Ancients, or alternatively Rabadon's Deathcap if you want damage. I usually go with WotA, though. Malzahar's base dmg is good enough. You can get Hextech Revolver earlier than this, such as when you have boots + tear.

If enemies have loads of physical damage, Zhonya's Hourglass is coolio. You need to throw away WotA or Rabadon for that, though.

And finally, once you have everything else bought, upgrade tear into Archangel Staff, if the game is long enough.

I use Ignite + Flash for summoner spells.


Max out Malefic Visions (your E ability) as soon as possible. This is your most important ability in the laning phase, as it allows freaky pushing, farming and keeps your mana pool up. It is really easy to use for harass as well: While Q and W can be easily missed, casting E on them will deal good damage. Focus on farming, but if enemy gets too close pop E on them.
In teamfights, cast it on the enemy carry/support/main target. When your team (hopefully) focuses them, the visions bounce into the next target when their carry is dead.

Null Zone (W ability) is good for killing enemies. Like, really good. Once you hit level 6 you can instagib most enemies you're against. It is great for teamfights too, since you can just throw it in and have enemies lose about 4-9% of their max hp per second (MR taken into account)

Call of the Void (Q ability) is good for harass, and in teamfights just cast it on the enemy mages or supports. You need to learn how to cast it ahead of running enemies, since it deals great damage later on.

Your ultimate, Nether Grasp, is really awesome. Up to 2.5 seconds of "You aren't going anywhere, pal" for the enemy. When the teamfights are about to happen (people poke each other with skillshots and stuff) ult an enemy that gets a little too close (unless tank). This should allow your team to gib the enemy easily, turning the fight into a 4 vs 5.

Don't underestimate your voidling. It is great ally when pushing early on, especially against cannon minions.



Ok, so this is how I play early game:

Level E first since you're not a bad Malzahar. Bad Malzahars don't level E asap.
I ignore Q completely, meaning I level it only once I hit level 13. Sure it is a good harass/push mechanism, but uses too much mana. Besides, E can be used for easier harass and W can push waves.
So basically skilling importance is R>E>W>Q.

First couple of levels are slow. Don't cast E immediately on minions, since it's damage isn't high enough. Wait till the melee minions are about 50% hp, then cast it on them. Autoattack the minion with visions. Later on when E's damage is good enough to kill minions without much help, you can try to focus on last hitting if you're into gold. Autoattack if you want to push.

When cannon minions arrive, you cast W so that the melee and cannon minions are affected by it. You should have your voidling always up when the cannon minion arrives, since it kills it quick.

When you hit level 6, you should start harassing the enemy. Get them quite low hp, and once you get close enough, use pool + lazer (W + R) combo. The enemy should be melting at this point. Once the channel for your ulti ends, finish up with Ignite + Malefic Visions. Either the enemy is dead, very low hp, or he is playing Gangplank.

Also, did you know that voidlings have 1:1 AD Ratio? Get 5 fully stacked Bloodthirsters, and your voidlings deal +500 dmg per hit as well.

Too bad they can't crit. I'd be far more impressed if Voidlings benefited from crit chance. Then every Malz packing IE and PD so each Voidling does 600 damage crits.

I find double Dorans much more effective on Malz as it gives you all the stats you need before you grab some of the costlier items like RoA, WotA or Rylai.

Yellow Mana regen runes and some utility masteries along with a single Dorans and smart use of E will give you all the mana you need, plus if you have a jungler that doesn't need it you can always grab blue.

No Tear, never OOM, that gold goes to an earlier Blasting Wand.

I didn't know it was possible to OOM as Malzahar. I didn't even know he had a mana bar.

I'm no TF expert but I know there are two popular builds.

Build 1: full AP, Deathcap, Lich Bane, etc. This is for pushing towers.

Build 2: full AS, Bloodrazor, Wits End, etc. This is for killing people.
