Good Anime
« on: May 10, 2011, 06:43:48 pm »

So, anyone got any unbiased opinions about decent anime movies / series? I've tried Googlnig this but all I get is a bunch of fans bigging up their own "wonderful" series.

I've enjoyed Elfen Lied, Death Note, .hack//, Cowboy Bebop and all Studio Ghibli movies. I've not enjoyed (but have watched some of) Naruto and Fullmetal Alchemist.

Any suggestions? Just throw at me whatever you find enjoyable as long as it's not really, really trite (hi Naruto).

Thanks in advance, ladies and gents. :P

Unfortunately I am too biased.

My favorite anime for example would be too trite for this. :'(

Why must people hate you "Fullmoon Wo Sagashite"?

The only thing I can seriously suggest is Gurren Lagann. It's almost mandatory for mecha fans.

Try the Brotherhood adaption of FMA if you don't mean that in the first place.  Darker than Black too and stuff.

Probably be best to post in the anime thread about this.

It's daunting to try to dive into a 457 page thread.

There's a reason most forums have seperate boards for things. :P

There's one I wanted to check out. :p Completely forgot about it.

I honestly have no idea.

It's a matter of degree. I may enjoy Planescape Torment but I don't say it's the be all and end all of RPGs (maybe the best storyline in gaming history but that's hardly a difficult question :p).

I have no idea what this is.

EDIT: It's just made me laugh because it has "Saga Shite" in the name which is hilarious on it's own.

Code Geass.  First season was great, second season was necessary because I was hooked.

Everything by Satoshi Kon (Millennium Actress, Perfect Blue, Paprika, everything else)

Ghost in the Shell.  First movie was iconic.  Stand Alone Complex has amazing highs, though I though the second season wasn't as compelling.  Second movie was worthless psychobabble.

Noein is fantastic.  Has a touch of trite, but it's classic sci fi.

Well, I can only suggest the Anime that I liked which includes (particular opinions and additional info in spoilers):

Last Exile
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Spice and Wolf
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I also liked Shikabane Hime during its first season but the quality declined during the second season and it didn't have a real ending.

FLCL. It's unapologetically silly sometimes, but thoroughly awesome. I don't know if it would strike you as trite, but it's definitely no Naruto/Bleach/DBZ spin off.

Sagashite, pronounced sa-ga-shte, kanji 探して, more Japanese romaji Sagasite, meaning search/look for.
Thusly, Fullmoon wo Sagasite means Look for the Fullmoon.

It's not like you have to read all the posts to know what's going on in that thread at any given time. You can just reply to what's going on in the last page or two, or pop in with whatever anime-related crap you want to mention. Occasionally someone even takes it a step further and replies directly to the OP. Because why the hell not I guess.

Also, I don't think this forum has enough to say about anime to support an entire board for it. The anime topic, as is, isn't even an incredibly fast-paced one.

Also, you posted this ad verbatim twice in the anime thread before making your own topic for it, within the period of a single day. Bad form sir.

Gurren Lagaan should be the last thing a Mecha fan ever watches, because afterwards giant robots will never, ever be the same. You just can't top that.

I'm just going to suggest you do not watch anime, and learn how to quantum mechanics instead. Or program flash games. Or obtain money. But I despise anime, so ignore me away!
