Alright, I know there are a bunch of Europeans here and at least some of you have to care a tiny bit about this. Personally, I am a musician and enjoy good music and, well, competition is human nature. 'Our tribe is better than your tribe' sort of thing. The first round of the semifinals finished just a short while ago. Iceland got through, and although announcement placement is supposed to be random, this is the third time in a row that us qualifying is announced last.

Also, what the fuck was with Greece qualifying? Even if they had shot that rapper and cut out all of his parts they'd still have nothing more than a mediocre song.

I don't know how it's in other countries, but after watching two of the latest qualifications in Poland, I can safely say that who gets chosen to represent Poland, or for that matter who gets into the qualifications, has got nothing to do with the quality of music that they play.
No, scratch that. It does - the more bland and forgettable your music is, the higher your chances.

That the state owned TV tries to sell this whole farce as "the most important musical event in Europe" or some such nonsense is making me want to force-feed them their statute, so that they can rethink the "promoting culture" bits contained therein.

Watching Eurovision. Songs on both ends of the quality spectrum, as usual.

I'm really liking Iceland and Finland's contributions, even though the latter needs a bit more polish. Germany's good too, and is a little edgier than the previous.

Never watched Eurovision, unlikely to in the future unless it's on while I'm having to do something I really don't want to do.

Any sign of political voting yet, or does that come later?

It's the same everywhere. They keep selling this contest of crappy songs performed by mediocre discographic-fodder musicians as some sort of cultural event, despite the fact that at times there have been contests (as in Big Brother clone-contests) to "choose" who will go to the contest.
My guess is that this shit keeps being done because some people are leeching lots of funds from Culture Departments in countries around Europe.

It makes a whole lot of money too, I guess.

I don't follow it, exactly. No songs I have heard so far has been any close to good, and Sweden's entry sucks. Only good thing about it is that the artist calls himself/is named Saade, which means I can refer to him as De'Sade. And there were much lol.

Finland wins. But I don't listen to "mainstream" music anyways.

I sort of remember liking Russia's... oh, and I'm fond of France as well.

It upsets me that almost everything is in English.

Harder to get interlinguistic votes otherwise. ;)
The only downside is the horrible accents of some.

Really?

Pfff.  I don't listen to Eurovision in order to hear the same old language.  This is one of the disadvantages to your native tongue being the lingua franca =/  And it's pretty hard to find the other version, much of the time.

Or rather, I guess that's what people's thinking.

I find it rather strange that somebody non-European would listen to it at all though, seeing as all music is always pandering to the lowest common denominator and worse than practically all other music of it's kind, and you (should probably) have no nationalistic interest in it. Why do you listen to it?

First, I was linked to Lithuania's a couple of years ago.  Then I got linked to France's recently.

And then I went on a binge to try to listen to all my favorite countries.  The chick who sings Poland's admittedly drab song is rather pretty >_>

Dunno, man.  I mean, why do I sit around listening to national anthems?  Just because.

Every time I've watched, I've found myself crippled with embarassment.

Therefore I will continue to pretend that this competition does not exist.
