Firewalking dwarves.
« on: January 05, 2007, 12:32:00 pm »

I just had a dwarf walk safely across lava.

Part of my current defenses involves a steam bath around my trade depot. During construction a number of rocks were placed in the channels. I'm currently in the process of building bridges on top of the rocks, in the filled lava channels. One of my masons went and did some interrupted Architecture work and walked across lava/unfinished bridge to leave.

I watched him bring and place the stones, then begin work. He moved onto the unfinished bridge, moved one rock "off" it, walked back on, fell down, and wandered off on another Construct Building job. The path he left by took him across another unfinished bridge square with lava under it. The bridge is still in the "Needs Architecture" stage.

I have a save backed up from immediately after this event. Since the bridge is unfinished I presume that this will happen again.

Oops. I made a mistake. The two squares the dwarf was walking on were just stuffed with rock. No lava channels, no firewalking.

However, I have discovered that both lava and water will not pass under an aquaduct. I'll try locking off the flows and demolishing the current 'ducts. Then re-establish one flow at a time and rebuild the aqueducts. See if a 'duct over a flowing lava/water cuts it off.

Watch out when destroying aquaducts - I've heard of all kinds of 'flooding the world' problems that doing that can bring.

This is very, very true. Also, never build bridges next to them and remove them, which will also flood the world.

I've never had any problems breaking 'ducts. Of course then, I don't break them with active flows going through. Because dry aqueducts can't flood.

***Update***

You cannot build an aqueduct over a channel with water in it. An aqueduct built over a dry channel will block anything from flowing through it.

Intended or bug?

But I can now dam channels this way.

This is Bug 53, basically.  Aqueducts and channels don't interact well, and I'm going to have to push channels down a Z level before I have enough room to make aqueducts work properly.

Okies, I'm happy then, aqueducts are just channel dams untill a fix is in. I'll re-route a few flows.
