Berent ranting...
« on: February 19, 2008, 12:15:00 pm »

First of all after playing for endless hours There is a serious problem I think we all need to address.  No not the very serious issue with steroids among our little friends.  Its the fact that We are limited to only setlling the edge of these great and glorious mountain ranges.  These are dwarves are they not?  Now if accessibility is an issue maybe it could be obtained through exploration in adventure mode, fostering a more involving experience between the modes.  While you are at it add the ability to climb with a rope, so we can get up shear cliffs.  Maybe you could adventure your way to a distant peak deep within the mountain range and plant a flag from a particular civ, then you could settle there?

Sorry for the rant, now back to designating walls for mining then canceling the job mid-dig to get that cool rough rock look......

One more thing is it just me or do these dwarf fortress dwarves seem to be a little weak in the mind??  I mean dont they seem to not take tragedy well?  Seems they should be a little more "stout" and not the emotional wrecks that have ended so many forts.  On a side note Love to be able to see an individuals relationships now.  And Thanks for the adventure mode work.

That sounds like elf-talk to me!  When a dwarf needs to get over a cliff, he doesn't use a rope, he pulls out a pick and digs it the fuck up!

Yeah, but a REAL dwarf would ask for the ability to mine in adventure mode rather than for ropes!

Making 3-wide ramps in adventure mode to access inner mountain ranges in fortress mode = MADE OF WIN.

Well, after we get expandable forts, we could grow into the mountains. Until then though there are plenty of us that would be fine being able to embark anywhere.

Imagine digging a tunnel in adventure mode, when you suddenly bust into a chasm!

The thought gives me chills  :D

Why?

All chasms are since the z-axis was added is a place for lizardmen to bounce of walls before dying.  Whenever I crack a chasm the only thing that comes out are the tortured cries of its former occupants plummeting to their deaths.

Yeah, after reading about monsters emerging from the depths if my dwarves "chasm" too much junk I built the waste dump on a secure, isolated corridor laden with traps, a lever-droppable emergency grating, and even military guards at major dumpings. Nothing ever came up...
Some of the latter devnotes seem to suggest that we once again have to fear the creatures of the depths. Let's hope it is so.

Funny thing, though, is that while chasms are, IMLO, wussy and completely tame in fortress mode, they become horrible pits of terrible monster spawning in adventure mode.  Or at least, they are the first time you see them.  Which is exactly what that would be.

What would be really scary about that?  Coming into a den of, say, antmen, interrupting their ritual religious dance around an Iron Man.  Especially if you're not a very powerful adventurer yet.
