Monastery Fort (See new thread for signups)
« on: May 09, 2011, 04:00:23 pm »

So, a while back, i had the idea of running a "monastery" fort, where i killed off all the dwarves of the female persuasion, and gave them all the custom name "Brother" except the expedition leader ("Father"), and then i started off making a temple and a cloister and dorms and such, all modeled after Catholic monasteries. thing is, i got bored part-way in and stopped. but i was wondering, would anyone like to make a monastery with me?

also, suggestions on monastery features would be nice.

EDIT: I forgot to say, this would be a succession game.

EDIT 2: List of floorplan options:

Option 1: http://www.gutenberg.org/files/21511/21511-h/images/image06.png

Option 2: http://www.historyfish.net/images/monastics/plan_beaulieu_med.jpg

make sure the only food is biscuits (the bread. MAKE SURE FLOUR'S USED!) and the only drink is wine.
everybody has to wear hoods and robes
make sure to build the fortress in the shape of a cross, with the food stores at the intersection. THE CROSS SHAPE IS ESSENTIAL.
mod the game so that necklaces (rosaries) can be made at a craftsdorf shop, and make produce endless amounts
make the cemetery have the coffins underground with a proper tombstone.

is this going to be more community or succession style?

So now all we've got to do is to put a couple of grannies into the LHC and smash them against each other at relativistic speeds. Lather, rinse, repeat until we got results.

Oh, sorry. I meant to say that it would be succession.

You could possibly gen the world as normal, and then after creating a world, change the ratios of the male and female dwarven caste so that only male dwarves are spawned so that only male dwarves will found and inhabit the fortress.

Well, I'd rather run it entirely vanilla. I am personally more comfortable with the original stuff.

Also, I find it ironic and funny that female (or male) dorfs should be killed off for the sake of making the other gender celibate (and would be a good substitute for vows of celibacy.
make sure the only food is biscuits (the bread. MAKE SURE FLOUR'S USED!) and the only drink is wine.

THAT i don't think is necessary. Monks had extensive gardens and kept bees, so there are plenty of other foods they ate, as well as the possibility of mead.

Nuns that live in their closed yard and war monks that protect them from enemies. The only way man can enter the closed yard is being injured and brought there for recovery.
And very occasionally, with the permission of the Highest they can couple and breed.

Erm...   ::)

I'm not sure i like that idea. The whole idea of a Monastery/Abbey is for the community to be completely monogendrous. (yes, i just made that word up. no need to thank me for improving our language.)

ANyway, i'm leaving the poll open till tomorrow, then i'm opening signups.

So, out of boredom, I decided that there were enough votes and that i should open voting for the general floorplan of the place (give or take some parts). I went searching for plans, and came up with 3 that i liked.

Option 1: http://www.gutenberg.org/files/21511/21511-h/images/image06.png

Option 2: http://www.historyfish.net/images/monastics/plan_beaulieu_med.jpg
