Just got this game off of Impulse as a Beta pre-order special for $15, and my first impressions are Star Control II, mixed in with strategy elements.
I am very impressed by it, and look forward getting to new technology and upgrading my mothership and weapons, and new ships hulls. Ship hulls can all be customized.
Very impressive for a two man team who wanted to build a game they wanted to play! Reminds me of the golden age of pc games when big publishers like EA weren't involved.
I am sensing a renaissance in the Game industry as the publishers just rehash old formulas that make dollar sense, and are not willing to take risk like indies.
Game Features/Story
The whole premise is that the exploration of the galaxy has been fueled by a new element nicknamed "Rez". Warp gates enabled the bridging of the gap between systems, and even more concentrations of "Rez" is centered near the galactic core. You are in control of a Mothership which contains pirates in search of these rich "Rez" deposits at the core.
The Mothership starts with a few hangars and only the ability to build one hull type. Eventually through the story line progression, you can upgrade the Mothership, and your Hulls and the accompanying components like Shield, Lasers, Engines, etc...
You can collect Rez by mining, and Data modules by destroying other ships. You get research levels by filling up on the data modules that drop from destroyed ships. You can also get new hull designs by Plans that are dropped by destroyed ships as well.
You also have to be mindful of your crew level, called "Goons". The more you have the faster repairs happen, and you can even trade crew in to various NPC stations. One of many attention to details the devs have implemented is how you pick up extra crew. When ships are destroyed sometimes an escape pod is ejected and you can pick up the pilot. Then there is a chance he will agree to a life of swabbing decks, or get ushered out the air lock, which is thoughtfully rendered in game.
Anyways here is the link, and for $15 you can't go wrong.
