people are saying that they are corrupt because they earlier gave it favorable reviews, but now trash it. I just think it's poor editorial journalism. A decent editor wouldn't let conflicting reviews get out.

They're not allowed to change their opinion then? They can't change "looks really promising" to "really didn't deliver"?

Whether you agree with their take or not, that's not exactly fair to them. A good editor's mandate isn't "make sure this publication's opinions are always in lock step." Developers often get a pass on glaring flaws during pre-release. At release, they get judged on them. That hardly seems unfair. If IGN would be guilty of something, it would be striking too a high and hopeful a note in pre-release coverage. But what else is new.

I played it for a few hours, and I have to say I really like it.
The only part I didn't like was that sometimes SMART doesn't like me, and decided not to climb that ledge with one second left on the clock.
Also, SMART doesn't appear to do what all of the previews said. If you look up and run at something, you'll bump into it, instead of vaulting it. You have to press whatever your jump button is to vault it.
That may be because I changed my control scheme though.

I gave it a spin for a few hours.

I would say it's... unremarkable. It's like it tries to play so exceptionally safe with everything that it doesn't take any risks. That's the kind of feeling I get from it. Also, for some reason it actually doesn't "feel" like there's a million billion customization options.

For example, in terms of character design... costumes are limited to side chosen. This makes sense, but the amount of costumes available for each side is limited by this. Especially for the security team. In fact, even though there are quite a few options for appearance... they kinda boil down to the same archetypes and I just don't feel that any one design I have is very different from any other.... which kinda defeats the point of being able to customize. I would say the reason for this is simply because everyone is actually TOO diverse. Compared to TF2 in which the amount of customization is actually so limited that you instantly recognize differences in player appearance; in here, everyone kinda just blends together into a grey mass. There's also not enough hats.

In terms of guns... Bleh. I don't want to say this but I think 70% of the guns are virtually identical. Even the add-ons aren't very impressive. It actually lists it right there on the add-on "all add-ons of this type are identical". There are minor differences between the weapon types but come on... all the guns even look the same! When I die in other shooters, I go "oh man, that guy's gun looks so awesome I can't wait to get it". Here I go, "oh look, he killed me with generic gun #7. I don't even know which one that is other than it shoots bullets."

As for gameplay and the rest? It's a generic shooter what else is it going to be? The parkouring thing is actually barely noticeable. I don't know if it's because of poor map design or something. It just isn't very noticeable. The only move I actually use in actual gameplay is the slide. Occasionally I'll try to jump around to reach someplace. Key word here is try. More often than not I'll fail to do so because it turns out the parkour thing doesn't work on a certain prop or what have you.

Well, there you have it. That's my impression of Brink.

The parkour thing is size based. Larger characters have a lesser range of movement than small guys. Small guys can vault off walls and stuff. Weapons are also limited by size. Small guys can't use chain guns. A lot of people mentioned the customization mechanics and their impact on game play not being clear enough.

I've played this some with absolute minimum graphics settings and it seems to work fine technically. The weapon customization options are lacking and the weapons all look alike but the only game I've played with weapon variety and customization I liked was Hitman: Blood Money. The only glaring flaw is the AI has crippling ADD. I was a medic guarding a guy who was hacking a safe and had to reload. While I was reloading the hacker got shot once and stopped hacking to engage in combat. After the fight was over a few seconds later the hacker decided that instead of continuing to hack the safe he was more than half done with he should jump out the window and abandon it.

The AI also seems to try to make you almost lose. They get much more aggressive when they're attacking and time is almost up but it's not the last objective on the map. I've also seen one just let my team mate finish an objective so the match could continue. It would be a nice way to make the player feel like they've accomplished something if it was more subtle. It's not terribly implemented but it's obvious that's what's happening.

I was screwing around as a light while doing the downed chopper mission, and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't beat it. My AI teammates would dick around in an area 50m from the last objective, and I'd get it around 35% done, and five enemies would rush in and I'd die in the time it took me to turn and look at them.

Then I said, "Fuck it," and changed to a heavy, set my weapons to the mini gun and the tube launcher. On the first time through I beat he level in 10 minutes. I was singing modified lyrics to this song the whole time.
"Do a little derp, make a little herp, get derp tonight..."
It would get louder when I was about to die.
Also, shouting, "WRONG!" whenever I shot a guy close range with the mini gun, because they die so fast.

You know what the best part of Brink is?

Reading the PS3 reviews that big up the multiplayer...

HOW DO THEY KNOW?!

remind me not to spend 50-60 dollars on a whim ever again.
I had my reservations about this game, yet I bought it?
Should have guessed it wouldn't even run terribly well on my computer.
Hm.

i also have performance issues with the game slowing down after 10 minutes or so, then getting better then repeat. This leads me to believe that it is a memory management issue rather than something else. These sorts of issues often get addressed within the first few patches. If you are using an ATI card then don't update to the latest driver, or it's hotfix as both are terribad.

Ampersand, that surely helps, but even with cutting edge equipment it's still a craphsoot with new games and performance. With so many possible combinations its hard for a game to be optimized for everyone at launch. Within a month or two most of the performance bugs should be ironed out. Let's hope play balance also gets tweaked. Overall I am happy and know this will be in rotation for many of us at least until BF3 if not longer.

I think I figured out what the biggest problem with this game is. It's a Bethesda game without extensive modding support.
