I love my new computer
« on: May 08, 2011, 03:35:06 pm »

I'm not used to having a good framerate with this game. I'm used to STARTING with a fps of 30. Now I have a constant 100. I even have a forgotten beast made of fire constantly evaporating ALL of the lakes in my cavern very quickly and my fps hasn't dipped a bit.

Nice  :)

I have secret dream of playing dwarf fortress in some of worlds fastest scientific supercomputers... imagine embarking to area which is as large as 257x257 or in other words its whole large-sized region! ...and still having constant 100 fps (or more) no matter what happens.

Just a 10x10 would be fantastic, I love the idea of massive sprawling fortresses spread across large areas of a number of biomes - but not until dwarf fortresses transition from outposts to fully fledged cities with leisurely activities, temples, libraries, inns, markets, shops etc.

Yeah my embark was a 5x5 so nothing too fancy. Now that I know how unstoppable I am my next fort will be at a 10x10 and we'll see what happens :)

My 6x6 is 25-18 FPS. If only DF could use more then one core....

I should probably search this before posting it.  But isn't it possible to share resources with virtual computing?  Couldn't a virtual machine have one core backed up by a 2,4,6,8....?

Wouldn't that give this game a kick?

I have a feeling that the overhead involved with running the virtual machine will cancel out any benefits gained.

We would have to write a special virtual machine software.

Issue is that benefits of multiple cores come from being able to do some things at the same time. DF only thinks about one thing at a time.

You have to write DF aware virtual machine that anticipates when things can be run in the background, I.e. detect that the code is pathing things, split off the tasks to run on multiple cores, and modify program flow midstream so it can handle getting so many answers at once. Then bugfix for a year, by which time Toady has already done it properly.
