Option to disable the bogeymen?
« on: May 08, 2011, 01:12:41 pm »

Is there some way to disable the bogeymen appearing at night? I have searched the raws and couldn't find anything. I really don't like the idea of having "bogeymen" showing up just because you are alone at night.

Personally, I think players should be able to sleep in the wilderness as long as they're okay with the risk of being jumped by bandits or wild animals. I'd rather not have bogeymen showing up.

You can disable them by dismembering them

In all seriousness though I think they are hardcoded into the game I don't think they are able to be turned off.
I once had an adventurer though that once just brutalized bogeymen they usually left him alone after i sliced them up a couple times.
Like I never saw them again not even after sleeping in the wilderness alone for a few nights I died by some fire Titan later though.

Supposedly, you can generate a world without bogeys in advanced worldgen, by setting the number of night beast types to 0. I've not tried this myself, but i've seen it mentioned multiple times already. Otherwise, just become so legendary that they stop trying.

According to the wiki page, setting night creatures to 0 in advanced worldgen will stop bogeymen.

I can also tell you that no matter how legendary you become, they still try to kill you at night-time. Usually ends up in me training up my other martial skills (biting, striking, kicking etc.)

Why would you want to disable them? Can there be too much Fun?

It's not just that I don't like being attacked by them. It doesn't matter if I can beat them all up or not. Their existence annoys me. I don't want them to exist.

Being jumped by a bandit and murdered in my sleep... okay.
Having to watch out or else the "bogeyman" will get me... wtf.

It's just my personal preference.

The bogeymen ruin the seriousness, that's why.

The real reason they are bogeymen is people get paranoid and see things they shouldn't at midnight in the forests. It could be a wolf, or it could be a peaceful bird.  What you see is a bloodthirsty monster of the night. That's the reality of the situation, but it doesn't really matter.

I think they're made to be a nuisance. Nasty creatures of the night, tick, this way the player learns that night is dangerous in adventure mode.
And it's only going to get worse with the next update.

I actually confirmed the 0 night creatures thing with a couple of different people before updating the wiki with that so even though I haven't tried it myself (I like bogeymen) it's been well verified and nobody has claimed it didn't work.

But... all you have to do is have one companion with you and they won't appear. Also, just do some powerleveling and get your dodge/block skill up there and they can't really do anything to you unless you let them surround you on all sides or something.

Also, they make great practice for leveling weapon skills. They're relatively robust and there are an infinite number of them....

The irony of that statement is funny.

Zombies are coming, but what I was referencing was werewolves.  :P
