Sediment and Me
« on: May 08, 2011, 03:53:50 am »

More to the point, sediment is nowhere near me. I've genned maybe 50 worlds since I picked the game up again, and I cannot for the life of me find a single sedimentary layer. Is there something wrong? Are they not being generated? Not. One. Damn. Layer. So very angry...

Any help anybody can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Try sticking this in your worldgen txt file. Its a pretty standard medium island, with only slight tweaks to the relative number of terrain squares and weather. I have used this for a few dozen forts and through using site finder (shallow and deep metals set to yes) always have at least one, often 2 or 3 sedimentary layers, loaded with iron ore.

add [AQUIFER] to limestone and use the site seacher to find it, altough i would add it to magnemite(or something like that) tough

Doesnt work, the finder ignores minerals that are aquifer tagged, it only finds layer stones that are aquifer.

Just try it! Its not like you die IRL if Urist McMiner falls into magma.

Wait, when was the last version you played?  It may be as simple as this:  the site finder changed in some relatively recent version, I think around the same time the "mineral scarcity" changed.  It no longer says "sedimentary layer" or anything like that whether there is one or not.  Instead you'll see:

Clay
Deep Soil
Shallow Metals
Deep Metals

... and so on.  There's not really an exact way to locate a sedimentary layer anymore (that I know of) without embarking and digging or using DFProspector or some such.

I think probably the closest alternative is to look for someplace with "Shallow Metals" since I imagine the reason you're after a sedimentary layer is to find hematite/magnetite and such.

Note that it says either "shallow metal" or shallow metals" accurately depending on how many types there are in that category, but there's no way from the site finder to know which metal ores they are.  You might get hematite, or you might just get piles of galena and nothing else.

What about Flux? At least 3 of flux stones make sedimentary layers and you can search for flux. I also find iron ores in all areas in flux, but it may be luck.

Just about every site has marble somewhere down deep (unless you have an extremely shallow embark), so searching for flux is pretty hit or miss.

I found marble (and quite much according to dfprospector) in area without flux stone indication (which had also much lignite in shale layers), so I'm not convinced that embark screen lists all flux stones. Though I agree that searching for sedimentary layers basing on flux is not failproof.

It seems sedimentry layers love aquifiers, which is normal in RL. Better hone up on aquifier busting skills, or modding
